860 3 pt lifts nicely, sometimes?

Hey guys

My 3 point hitch is giving me some problems. I just bought the tractor ('57 ford 860) and the 3 point hitch raised and lowered fine when I went to purchase the tractor. Now when I go to use it the arms only lift sometimes.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when it works and when it doesnt. If I manually lift up the hitch while the lever is up it stays in place but doesn't have any lifting power of its own. Except for once and a while when I try to raise it it actually does work

Pretty new to hydraulics and could use some advice here. I checked the fluid and it looks a little grey

thanks for your help

grey fluid is water.

water causes problems in hyds.

water can rust metal and make parts that move stick.

water and oil emulsify and make things that move, get gummed up.

If it is cold in your area, emulsified oil can be like WAX, and any free water can freeze.

If it works fine once when it works, then i would do this:

dump in a gallon of diesel, a quart of atf and a pint of rubbing alcohol.

run it around the yard a couple times then park it while running to let the oil just cycle and anything stirred up settle.. then try the lift running it up and down. if it works, you may have washed out the gummed up emulsified oil from the valving.

drain... drip .. then refill with clean utf.

Sounds like you have water in the fluid and it needs to be changed. You may also have to pull the inspection plate off and have a look see to see if any thing is sticking like the control valve or other such things

Would you recommend flushing the hydraulic system in my Ford 3000's with the diesel-ATF-alcohol mixture? Thanks Soundguy.

I will do exactly that. Any recommendations on type of hyd. fluid for these machines? I may end up running it this winter. Also, I'm assuming I'm supposed to completely drain the hyd fluid before adding your special cocktail correct?
