1963 Ford 4000

I am new to the form and am looking for information. My Grand-dad bought a new 4000 Ford tractor serial number 2154. From what I have found it was made 1962 however they are all called 63 or 64 models. The sheet metal is in good shape and I am thinking of have it restored and driving it in parades or small local shows. My question is I guess is it worth it? Any discussion on this model? I know I will need new rear rims and some other items. It is still a 6 volt system should I change it to a 12 volt system? I also was told that it was possible to put on a 9 volt battery on a 6 volt system to give it more power. Could this be true?

The four cylinder 4000 model was made between late 1962 and early 1965. Most folks do indeed refer to them as 63 or 64 models.

Restoration of an antique Ford tractor is a labor of love rather than a money making proposition.

I have kept all of my vintage Ford tractors 6V but many convert to 12 V, usually to cover up other issues. I asume that you mean 8V rather than 9V battery. Conversion to an 8V battery is a bad idea an all but the most unique of circumstances.

Welcome to the forums!

There were a few different versions of the 4000, even in the
'63-64 models. Some had gear shift transmissions, some had
Select-O-Speed transmissions, some were row crop models
like mine pictured below.

Price varies greatly depending on what version, condition,
and of course "location, location, location".

They are great tractors and if you can do all the work yourself
you might get away with restoring it for a little more than
what it is worth. If you have to hire it done, you'll want to
be prepared to keep it forever! Its a lot of work and hiring it
done is way beyond the market value of any of the versions.

If you're keeping it for a family heirloom, then only you know
what it is truly worth to you. There are a lot of great family
tractor stories around and we enjoy them a lot.

In any case, skip the 8V battery. Either leave it 6V and fix it
so that it works right or convert it to 12V. The 8V is a band-aid
for a poorly working 6V system and the 6V charging system
isn't designed to charge it. Have you seen an 8V battery
charger lately? 6V and 12V can be bought at Walmart.

Share some pictures when you can.
I paid $1500 for this one with dual remotes and SOS.
I took the remotes off and put them on my 960.

agree with the others.

as a worker, it is on the strong end of the prior models. if not going for oem style PA rims, generic loops or take offs from another tractor should not be bad. make sure your centers match your rims. if you have the old spiral centers, someone ?arthurs? may still make a non PA rim that bolts to that spiral center... or just buy loop centers, etc and get new tires with tubes on loop rims from someone like tucker, bolt and go.

stay 6 if it works or go 12 for all the reasons mentioned. 8v is a hassle getting the vreg adjusted, and 8v batteries are no better than a 12v in price.

My dad has a 62 like Royse's. Dad's is a wide front. Dad
paid $2000 for the tractor and then spent $3500 on the
engine and brakes.

I doubt dad could get is money back. It is a very good
tractor. It has the SOS. When moving snow it will run
circles around his 706 IH or the neighbors TO20 fergie.

Any tractor, unless you have a rare production model. Will
cost as much or more than the tractor is worth if restored
correctly.

I am currently working on a 1957 JD 620. It has been
sitting for a year. It is full of water. I have rebuilt
the starter, replaced both battery cables,New
points, wires, plugs, carb kit. Cleaned water out of the
cylinders, fuel tank and unstuck the clutch.

Dollar amount I'm right at or over $900. I did get it
started but. The generator is not working,it needs a new
battery, muffler, seat cushions. Water in the carb has
rusted several pin holes in the bowl. It will need
replaced. Now it has a coolant leak.

The NFE 4 cyl. fords are just plain really nice to own. They are very nimble to drive which is a help in a lot of situations, they have the power for lots of jobs, but best of all they are very easy on the eyes with the styling and paint scheme.
