Hi everyone new to the fourm....
So I have a 1975 ford cl40 skid steer 40hp gas and it dose not have aux what I was thinking of doin is getting a 3pt hitch backhoe set up off a old ford or Massey and modifieing it to quick connect to my bucket now for the harder part is the hydraulics I was thinking a bout during a gas pony engine that I would make a mount on the digger unit with a pto style pump to operate just the digger? Now what size "pony motor" would I need horse. Power wise? And would I be better of retrofitting the pto pump that will more than likely be with the backhoe unit? Or useing a set up similar to what you'd use on a wood splitter? And what kind of GPM would I need to effectively have decant ground brake and lift?........and finally should I make it quick connect to the bucked or .permently mount it to the back of the michine ? I kinda got the pony motor ideA from the towable backhoe units mostly used for trenchging

Hi and welcome.

I'm sorry I can't answer most of your questions, but I do know that gpm does not generally affect the strength of the digging or the lifting, only the speed. it is the psi that affects the strength.

As for whether to mount it on the front or the back, that is up to you, but one of the desirable features of a skidsteer is it's small size and maneuverability in relation to it's lifting strength, so they can fit in small places and still do a lot of work. Having a backhoe permanently mounted on the back would take away from that maneuverability in small spaces. If you don't need that, then you could go ahead and mount it on the back.

The cl40 is not a big machine. If you can find a small backhoe from a bobcat or case and mount it on the front then that probably would work but it has to be a small backhoe. You can use your existing hyd hoes to just hook up to the control block that your backhoe has as you only need a supply and return line. you just have to tie into those lines that goes to your lift arms. keep in mind your rating for your bucket lift is probably 800 lbs. Will make a difference which motor you have. They came with 3 different motors. Like I said don't put to big of a back hoe on it or youll tear it up. There not bad little machines if you have a nice one. Just my 3 cents . Norm

It has the 40 horse gas engine has decent power for its size now if I hook in to the lift arms how would I lift the unit for transport ? I was thinking of a 3 point set up with a pony motor so the dig unit would be completely self contained? I do know it has a 2000 pound tipping weight

They made two gas motors. One was air cooled and one water cooled of which mine was. The other was a diesel. All you should need is a supply and a return line to the valve control. If you look at your lift arms one line should be a supply and one is a return line. I would think you could just tie into those lines with a tee fittings. That way your lift arms would still work. Using anything driven off the motor itself for hydraulics I would say no to that. I am not sure if your motor would stand that as its balanced the way it is now and it could cause a seal to wear out if it became unbalanced.

mine is the liquid cooled gas I been thinking about repowering any suggestions as far as astrait foreward swap?
