Ignition problems 860

My 860 6 volt will not start. With ignition switch on, test light shows voltage to the ignition (marked positive)side of coil. Also shows voltage from the negative side of the coil to the distributor. The secondary wire shows no to spark to the distributor. I replaced the coil, points and condenser. Any ideas? Thanks, Phil

he voltage should come & go (on/off/on...) on the wire between coil & distributor. If it does not, clean the points as they are not making an electrical closure.

Trouble shoot then parts never the other way around or you can cause more problems. Pull the distributor cap off and rotor and dust cover. Be sure you take the spring clip off and put it back on when you pull the dust cover. Turn on the ignition and open and close the points by hand with a stick or some other thing that is not metal. You should see a spark at the points when you do that. If no spark then the points need cleaned or the insulator going into the distributor could be shorted out

I agree with Old. Where the wire comes into the distributor from the coil may be touching metal inside the distributor. I had one where the connector had broken and someone added another connector on top of it. The bottom one was touching the inside of the distributor.

bingo.... points are not closing or grounding correctly. clean them up and make sure the little ground strap is still in the distributor. When the points are open, you measure voltage on both sides.. and then when the close, they ground out the distributor side. So depending on how the engine is setting when you were testing, the points could be open or closed. If opened, your readings are correct. If they were closed your readings show a problem.
