Can someone please tell me if there is a difference in the rearend housings of 600/601 compared to 800/801. I have been told both ways - you can look at one and tell the difference and there is absolutely no difference in their physical size. Does anyone have an answer?

The 888 rear axle assembly is larger and heavier than the 6/7/9** axle assembly.

The size difference is obvious when side-by-side.

The difference between the 601 and 801, other than the size which was already mentioned, is if you look at it
from the rear the "EARS" where your draft spring/toplink is connected on the 601 will be flush on the casing. The
801 will be recessed into the rear casing. Also with the 801 on the later models like 1961 and up them beefed up
the casing so where the rear trumpets bolt on it will look like a raised rod or bugle going across the casing.
You can see the recess toplink and raised rod across the casing on this 4000 which had the same style rear as the
later 801.

Next up is a photo of the recess on the early 801. You can see it easier on the gold paint of my '59 gold demo.

Next is a photo of the later 801/4000 rear. You can clearly see the raise part in the casting to beef up the bolt support.
