Ford 5000 Select O Speed

I am posting this question for a friend. He has a Ford 5000 with select o speed transmission. He is having a problem with the control selector assembly. New Holland's website only shows the Ford 5100 and 5200 when pulling up the parts diagram so I'm not 100% sure how the 5000 would compare. I will be taking the parts diagram to him and try to compare but thought maybe there was some experience with this that could help.

The select o speed control was working fine and then suddenly started to spin freely. Almost as if something has broken loose. Take it apart and bolt it back together (making sure in the proper gear) and it works very briefly (enough to get it moved into the shed) and it spins freely again. Once it starts to spin it never grips again. Take it apart and put it back together and it works very briefly until it spins free again. The cable coming up from the transmission appears to be working as it should. The "ears" connecting the control assembly and transmission cable look good and appear to be staying connected as well.

Any thoughts? Procedures to diagnose?

It has been years since I had my SoS selector apart so I will offer this - if it appears that the problem is not in the selector then the problem may be at the other end. If the cable end stays engaged in the selector and the cable moves in the conduit properly then the next place to check is under the cover to see if the driven end of the cable or the valve pack control shaft connection point is the issue. A parts diagram will give you an idea of how it all fits together but only watching it operate may solve the mystery. Good luck and let us know what it turns out to be.

The short or all purpose version, the ones you straddle the tranny while on the seat, of the 5000 was called the 5100 in the parts books and the tall row crop version with the flat platform was the 5200. The SOS shifters are different between the two I believe but work the same. Sounds like your control valve may be hard to turn and that is causing the nut on the shifter shaft to come loose. Make sure you have the proper repair books before digging to deep into an SOS or it can get expensive in a hurry if you break something. My 2 cents worth Greg NE

On the parts site, 5100 means a 5000 series general purpose ag chassis and 5200 means a 5000 series row crop chassis. I believe that they both had decals from the factory that said 5000, so look at the parts drawings for the front axle and steering setups for both the row crop and regular ag chassis 5000 models to tell what exactly your friend actually has.

(quoted from post at 10:10:20 11/17/15) if it appears that the problem is not in the selector then the problem may be at the other end.
From his description the slipping has to be in the shifter. That does not mean that there isn't something binding the cable somewhere between the shifter and the other end or at the other end itself.
then the next place to check is under the cover
Not on a 5000. On those it would be above the cover. 5000 SOS transmissions are different than other SOS transmissions in this respect. The distributor is inverted so that their control valve is on the bottom of the transmission.
