Problem encountered while draining old antifreeze Ford 3600

I read the posting about radiator flush and refill with new antifreeze by ml_work on his Ford 4000. I was encouraged to give it a try on my Ford 3600. Previously had been only adding to the radiator as needed.

Got both the radiator drain open with difficultly (had to bend the wings off and attach with a 9/16 socket). Also opened the block drain and rinsed with water from the hose. Got a good amount of rusty/brown sediment out and flushed until the water ran clear.

My problem is that now I have put both plugs back in and refilled with 50/50 antifreeze mix and now am noticing the drain on the radiator itself is dripping. I used a teflon plumbers tape on the threads and tightened some more but it is still dripping. I am afraid to tighten too much...

Any suggestions?

Replace the drain cock. The current part number is 86625234 and it should be available at any New Holland dealer, or on line at partspring.com or messicks.com

Thanks Sean. Thought I may have overfilled the radiator so I took some out so that the level was 1 1/2 inches from top of filler neck but still dripping. I did check for leaks before I filled with antifreeze but guess I didn't see the water drip as well as the green antifreeze.

I know its like telling someone to close the barn door after the cows got out.

but, if you owned a Dodge diesel truck you would have encounter the sorry cheap radiator drain cock problem.

most just take the lower radiator hose off and drain the system that way, never, never, try to loosen that crapped radiator drain plug.

some of these old radiator drain cocks, that are not used much, can be a real problem.

file this information for later use,

agree repalce the drain cock. many farm stores MAY have them too.

I like a thick plumbers paste for these.. oateys, harveys, gasoila, etc..

Thanks for the advice soundguy.
Ford Tractor place closed today due to Veterans Day holiday but I will get new radiator plug. I will try some plumbers paste. Do you put it on all plugs to keep loose and help seal?

Thank you wellmax99 for the suggestion of taking off the lower radiator hose. Think I will try that next time. Question about that, will flushing water from the radiator through the hose, flush the block of the engine? Or should I still remove the engine plug?

yup, I use thread past on 'MOST' all pipe plugs in general, to make them easier to remove... there are a few rare exceptions
