Ford 860 12 Volt Solenoid Switch Location

I recently purchased a Ford 860 serial # 16516 (1955). The air cleaner tube from the cleaner to the carb was missing ( among other things) so I purchased the part and attempted to install it. What I found was the solenoid switch was bolted to the starter. (The switch works, etc.) Because of the switch, the air filter tube to the carb wont fit. I then saw two threaded studs on the battery box and also noticed the studs seem to fit the solenoid mounting bolt pattern. I think if I move the solenoid to the battery box, the air cleaner tube will then be able to go to the carb. Is that how it should be???
Does anyone have a photo of the proper location?

PS the tractor has been converted to 12 volt alternator. Is the replacement solenoid part the same for a 12 volt as as 6 volt?

Yes solenoid belongs on the battery box but if it fits the starter then good chance it is the wrong solenoid. Just did a job on a 861 last Sunday that had a bad solenoid and the first one the parts guy gave me was the wrong one and would not fit where it should be put on the battery box

Yes, it goes on the battery box.
This picture was taken of a bad install but hopefully you get the idea.
Battery box to the right, heat shield on the fore/left.

Do you remember the correct solenoid part number? Does anyone know the diameter and thread count for the studs on the battery box? I tried 1/4" course & fine threads, neith want to fit. Is the stud a 5/16"? Seems big to me.

Thanks

Solenoid I used was part #NCA11450A like the one sold [b:fad4ed918a]here.[/b:fad4ed918a]
I don't remember the thread size but it was a standard SAE nut.

5/16th is correct and you use a 1/2 inch socket on it. As for the part number the guy had it set up with a universal ignition switch so it was not one that would work with the factory starter button

thanks about the stud size.

The tractor has a new ignition switch installed . The PO left the start button in place but it has no function. Will the original solenoid switch work with a new key type ignition? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do you?

Thanks again.

The factory solenoid uses a ground to pull it in so no it would not work with a universal ignition switch that has the start position. You need the common auto type solenoid made for say a Ford car or truck with 12 volt system . One like one would uses on a 1965 Ford 1 ton would do the job

I have the present solenoid switch that is used to start the engine. I will try to put the solenoid onto the battery box and see if i can install the air cleaner pipe by it. I suspect the reason the cleaner pipe was removed is becuase the solenoid switch was too large to allow the pipe to pass therefore they removed the pipe but why it was mounted on the starter with a home made bracket, I can't tell why? A real strange situation.
