They are essentially the same machine - the 3 cylinder 2000 that is.
2600 is newer - built 76-83.
Has a few refinements over the 2000. Mostly hydraulics - Higher gpm gear type hydraulic pump and has a filter in the system.
Better electrics as it has an alternator and not a generator.
Better, longer lasting tach and hour meter.
Otherwise about 90% of the tractor is identical and most parts - engine, trans, rear end, brakes, tin, steering, etc, etc will interchange.
I think most of them will have live pto and power steering.
Outstanding small tractor.

The 2600 replaced the 2000. One additional change with the hydraulics in addition to what Ultradog has said, is that starting with the x600 series, the 3 point has two control handles, one for position control and one for draft control, and as a result you can actually mix the two modes. With the thousand series and earlier, there was a small draft control lever that switched between the two modes so you could only have one or the other.

I have had a 2600 since 1980 with no problems. Has a double clutch for the live PTO which is great. A glow plug in the air intake and a block heater for winter use. The only real thing I have done is to replace the fuel injection return line as the hard plastic line on #3 was dripping. I currently run a Woods Back hoe on the 3 PT using the tractors own oil system.
