hydraulic question for you ford guys piston backup ring

has anyone had any trouble with the size of backup rings for the hydraulic pistons? worked on my brothers 1967ish 4000 and replaced the cam pin and orings, and he had ordered a aftermarket rebuild kit and the white plasic backup oring was about 1/4" short, went to the new holland dealer and they had aftermarket and oem and they was both 1/4" short to. ended up getting one for a 4610 i think it was and cutting it to fit. anyone heard of this before?

Though I have not encountered your particular problem, I have experienced numerous problems with aftermarket parts provided by various suppliers. As a result, I nearly always bite the bullit and buy parts from CNH.

ya i figured it was a problem with aftermarket so i told him to get a oem from new holland but it was exactly the same as aftermarket so that wasnt the problem this time.

Be advised that many (most?) (all?) dealers will sell aftermarket as well as OEM parts.

You cannot be certain that you have genuine OEM parts absent the OEM packaging.

it was in the original new holland packaging, the parts guy had no idea what the deal was on it either, just seems kind a strange

The problem you run in to with old tractors is someone worked on it before and there's no telling what the part that's in there now originally came off of. Someone changed it long ago with what they found that would work.

Years ago at a Deere dealership I worked at a 2950 came in with bad hydraulics front and rear. Tube bad in trans ruined pump. Replaced both and steering and loader worked great. Lift was still erratic so off comes the rockshaft to rebuild all of it. Didn't help. Pulled back down and rechecked a dozen times. The owner even started calling me rockshaft but I wasn't laughing. Turned out a jokey had replaced the entire rockshaft assembly with one from a different model. It was identical except for 1 number off in the casting and 1 oil hole shy under the valve. Found a correct used casting and everything worked perfect.
