Ford 2600 Main shift lever will rotate 360 degrees

Guys my 2600 diesel has the standard 8 speed trans and everything works just as it should except my main shift lever (left side sitting on tractor) will rotate all the way around and I know it shouldn't. What is missing? I pulled the top cover today and nothing looks wrong at all but I'm just not seeing what it is. I suspect some sort of roll pin in the shifter cover assy. Please help me out. Thanks.

There is a notch in the shift cover on one side.. there is a rivot that fits in the ball of the shift lever. When worn out, the rivet will be flush with the ball and nearly impossible to see. Remove the remains of the rivot and replace with a common rivet used for sycle blades and reassemble in shift cover to fix. rivet will fit tight in the shift lever.

The shift lever on my 3600 did that one day. On mine, the shifter had a molded piece that kept it from rotating. I priced a new shifter and after I had picked myself up from the floor, ordered an aftermarket transmission cover with shifter. Before that arrived I welded and ground down a couple ears where mine were worn off and that has kept me going since early summer. Maybe next spring I will put the new shift cover on it.

sotxbill, I'll look at mine tomorrow to see if I can figure out exactly where the rivet is. If I remember correctly from a quick glance earlier today, the ball you speak of is below the large shift cover itself on the "wet" side of the assembly. There is some sort of thin cover on this bottom side that I assume I'll have to unbolt to see exactly where this rivet is in relation to the ball? You wouldn't happen to have photo or diagram that clearly shows this rivet would you? I have an IT manual but the diagram of this shifter assy is to small I can't make out this part I'm interested in. Thanks for your help.

The rivet is pressed in the side of the ball and engages a slot in the shift cover ball socket. LH side IIRC.

Thanks Rick. Is the shift ball and shift cover ball socket you refer to all above the plane of the shift cover (dry side) or below on the wet side? I'm just not 100% sure how to remove my shifter from the cover assy so I can tell this and I don't want to break anything because I didn't ask. Also, what does "IIRC" mean?

yes.. pull whole assembly.. remove circlip on shift lever and remove from bottom. On my 3000 it was on the right side also where there is a slot in the cover for it to ride in. I had to look very hard to find it as it matched the shifter pretty well. I dont remember exactly how I got it out, but I think I spun it with a punch or drill bit, and the it broke loose and shook out. but that was over 20 years ago.

Hate to say it but I can hide my own easter eggs nowdays.

If I Recall Correctly.

Shifter comes down out of the cover after removing the knob, snap ring, spring, and plastic cover. The "wet" side.

I got the retaining clip off above the spring on the shifter and found the pin that is worn out as described. I assume I need to center punch it and drill it out but need info on the size of the rivet so I don't drill it out too large. What size rivet is it and what exactly do I need to buy to replace the old one.

I have it torn down and see the worn rivet. Does this have a ford p/n or can anyone tell me exactly what size rivet I need?

I got the shifter out but wasn't completely successful drilling it out. I drilled it then attempted to use a screw extractor to remove it with no luck. Ended up having to drill a 3/16" diameter hole and still can't get it out although not much of it is left. I'm afraid I've drilled to big of a hole. Like I asked before, I need to know what diameter the rivet is to I know what size hole to drill in the end. I think I'm going to have to weld the hole up and simply redrill for another rivet.
Any suggestions or comments?

iirc.. i used a common sickle bar rivet from tractor supply.. They come in different lengths but you can cut it to the length you need and the head of the rivet is the important thing anyway. You can put one in there and tack it on top and bottom but not the sides as the sides ride in the groove. amazing what one little rivet does to the shifter. or weld a hard screw in there with a button head on it.. as long as it stays put and has a head to fit in the groove. take a tap and thread the hole for a hard bolt, and grind down the head to an easy fit in the groove, and screw it in with locktite on the threads so it stays put.

I replaced the main shifter retaining cup - ground the old one out and welded in a new one. Also replaced the pin that mates to this retainer in the main shifter. Replaces the O-rings on the shifter, rubber boots and plastic cups on the top side of each shifter lever. The shifter cover assy is basically totally rebuilt and works like new.
