134 engine differences, cam etc?

We have had for years a Ford naa with what
appears to be a later motor in it as it has
a spin on oil filter that is made right on
the block, no adapter as most have. We
recently bought a 661 and the first thing
we noticed is the motors sound much
different especially under load. Got me
wondering if were different cams used over
the years or in different applications etc.

Yes there were two different camshafts used on the 134 and 172 gas and diesel engines. One of the camshafts uses a 1/4" tapped holes to hold on the pump drive gear the other uses a larger bolt. I'm currently in the middle of inventorying 134 & 172 parts so this is fresh in my mind. I've got 2 each of one camshaft on the bench and 3 of the other variety. The hole size is the only apparent difference between the two.

The cam gears however came in several different degrees of advance or retard. Most that I see are standard maybe you have something different.

There were different size manifolds for the 134 vs 172 gas engines. Maybe your tractor has a larger manifold, as it might have been changed out during it's lifetime.

Interesting point on the timing gears, maybe that is the difference. I just was surprised that they are the same motor yet have a distinctly different sound especially under load.

As long as they stay running let's hope it stays an unsolved mystery for you. Usually when something lets go in the timing case it's a big mess and cost a fair amount to fix.

Assuming proper state of tune for each engine and similar exhaust components, I would expect little or no difference in sound between 134 CI engines of different vintage.

That said, there is a distinct difference in sound between early 172 CI engines with the so-called small exhaust and later model 172 CI engines with the larger exhaust and higher compression.

I have done valve adjustment on both semi recently, I do wonder if the one in our older naa having been an industrial motor, i.e. has the fuel pump block off plate, could make for cam or compression difference.
