63 Ford 4000 tach and fuel glitches

Howdy All, We recently purchased a 63 Ford 4000 5sp 172c.i. engine. Fluids were changes which looked like original from the factory! A tune up kit was installed and the carb (TSX 813) was overhauled. I should add that the plug wires were changed out as well as the coil...12V system. The tractor ran rough when we got it but seems better after parts were replaced. Still, carb power adjustment seems too rich or too lean with no middle ground. When opening the throttle all the way the tractor sputters a few times but does accelerate. We checked operation of the centrifugal weights and they seem fine. Dwell is spot on and the only other thing we haven't checked is the timing...no timing light yet. Are there known issues with the TSX 813 carbs? Any info may help!

The tach on the tractor was inop but the cable was moving ok. I ordered a new tack from this site and installed it the other day. At idle the tach showed about 450-500rpm so when the throttle was opened all the way the tach needle wound around the gauge until it struck the pin where the needle rests with the engine off. I can't believe a new tach would be the issue here? Throttle was lowered until rpm read 2400rpm. Throttle stop was adjusted to this point but then throttle movement was limited to about 3" of travel from idle to max power. Has anyone ever had issues like this? Other than a new cable what might be causing this problem? Heaps of thanks for any and all suggestions!!

The quality of aftermarket replacemnet tachs is abysmal. Yes, the tach could very well be junk.

Late model 172 gasoline engines with the so-called "large (all of them) carburetor" are jetted rich. I have never seen one that does not blow out a puff of black smoke when accelerating from idle to full throttle even when the carburetors are spot on.

FWIW, gasoline was cheap in the 1950s and few (including design engineers) were much concerned about wasted fuel.

like Dean said, the aftermarket proofmeters are always suspect.
give the site a call, they'll make it good.
few years ago, a shipment of tachs from india had those exact symptoms.
I dealt with an honest seller who told buyers upfront about it, and charged $8 for them new in box. I bought one to fill an empty hole...looks nice...acts exactly like yours....i didn't care, can't say I look at em much anyway.

your engine.....honestly, timing has to be right before you can do anything else...idle and much more important, book spec high rpm, advance degrees correct.
If that is right, usually a stumble when yanking the throttle is a lean condition.
also agree that back then, engineers didn't care about gas.
some directions even say right out...(some Deeres, others when setting up for very hard work).......to adjust for the slightest puff of black smoke on abrupt acceleration.
