Holley followup Question

So here's a question I haven't been able to find the answer to in reading search results:

1. float height is important - my question, do I measure to the carb body or include the gasket in the measurement? Ford manual doesn't show (Fig 14 Chapter 1 from Fuel System section) They do say to install the metering gasket and then do the float height - problem is my Holley uses one gasket for both so the bowl gasket is there (this time I folded the gasket up and measured to the carb body)

2. Gaskets - carb currently has one-piece gasket for bowl & metering assembly. Is there a supposed to be any passages in the gasket specific to the carb model number? I wonder if the PO put the gasket in upside down? Hobo cuts his own but I was wondering on thickness of gasket material.

no one answered the previous thread - anyone know?

Sincerely,

The thickness of the carb gasket is not going to make squat difference in the correct float level setting. If the level is with in a 1/16" that is close enough.

1/16" is not close enough for ideal operation of the Holley carb due to the incorporation of the vacuum operated accelerator pump.

IIRC, Ford specifies float drop within 1/32" (could be 1/64" but I could not reliably obtain 1/64" setting).

Cannot recall about measurement vis a vis gasket.

Dean, I came to find out that the vacuum elbow has a restrictor in it - it was plugged solid, so no vac advance.

Turned out the dizzy was way out - 8* rather than the 2* as per the manual.

Still not running quite right, needs a bit of choke to keep from surging and sputtering - only ran it 10 min or so in the barn (doors wide open) to re-check the timing - so maybe it wasn't up to temp yet.

Verify proper operation of the vacuum motor on the distributor.

Easy to do by watching breaker point plate while sucking on end of vacuum line.

Needs a bit of choke? Sounds like might be the well-known Holley accel pump problem...check the archives for articles.

Thanks guys.

I spent the last few weeks compiling all the posts from current searches and archived posts about the Holleys.

The few questions I could not find the answers to are the ones at the beginning of this thread. I don't believe they've been answered by post but there was one where someone emailed the poster some instructions/advice and I couldn't access that.

The accel pump piston assembly was cleaned and polished but re-stuck, I don't know if it's working correctly now -

looking at a HK02 kit that has a new piston assembly as well as both types of gaskets.

Thanks,

You can read all I have had to say about them... Don't get hung up on float levels set it lower it will not case a issue...

The Only problems I have had on mine are any others I have messed (other than ell fitting gaskets) with is if the float gets heavy over time it will cause it to load up on turns...

I feel at home with them and love mine :D
