Ford 4000 - gas -- running roughly

I was doing some brush-hogging on Saturday and my tractor was running great. I shut it off, went inside for the night, and when I came out the next morning and started it the tractor sounded like it was running just fine. That is, until it started moving.

It sounds like it is not firing on all cylinders.

What do you think the most likely thing(s) are that it could be? Spark plugs or Spark plug wires? Anything else?

Thanks for your help.

You could have dirt inside the distributor cap. A damp morning will work with that dirt to make a discharge path. You might get by with just cleaning it but if you have run it for very long there will be a pathway burned into the cap that will keep on shorting out one or more plugs. If so you need a new distributor cap and rotor.

Check your spark.
Look for a bright bluish - white spark that will jump at least 3/8".
Short or yellowish spark Will Not Do.
Requires no tools to pull a plug wire and see.
Also, till we get to know you here, always mention if you have a 1962 - 64 4 cylinder Ford 4000 or a 1965 - 75 3 cylinder 4000.
They are completely different tractors that bear the same model #.
Though spark is spark and all gassers of whatever brand or stripe need it.

Lot of good help on these old Fords here.

Hi! Your replies have already helped me out immensely. Thank you!

I have a 1972 3-cylinder Ford gas tractor, FYI. Sorry that I neglected to include that info in my original post.

Replaced everything -- distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires, spark plugs and it was still running rough so we called in the tractor experts, our local tractor repair guys.

They picked up the tractor on Friday and I just heard back today -- they said a push rod had become unattached and has to be put back on.

Do any of you know what might have caused such a thing to happen?

Thanks!
