Need Help with a New Fuel Gauge - Ford 601

I installed all new gauges and a sending unit (purchased the kit for those era Fords) on my Ford 641. The tractor has all new wiring and new everything. It was installed a couple years ago and just finished the tractor this week. Put a couple gallons of fuel in it and the gauge moved up a little as expected. Well since I finished re-doing the tractor, I figured I'd dump 5 gallons in it to make sure it had plenty of fuel and to check the operation of the gauge. For some reason the gauge only read about 1/4 of a tank....actually a shade less. I also noticed that the gauge doesn't sit still. Sometime it will "jump" between setting (not float but jump). Have I done something wrong or should I remove the sending unit to check?

Take the float out of the tank and ground the sender disc to tractor body. Manually cycle the float low to high and note gauge response. The sender maybe wore out. That is, the rheostat wiper may be making poor contact.

The sending unit and gauge are brand new! How could it be worn out? Also, is there something I could do to fix the poor contact if that's what it is??

(quoted from post at 23:03:35 10/05/15) Poor contact may be simple ill fitting parts that break contact after partial travel range.

I think I will remove the sending unit and test it as suggested in the post above. I will also take my dremel and clean the unit and tank where it mounts to bare shiny metal. Hopefully it will test good and wire wheeling the tank will fix it. (well......just thought about the possibility of gas and the wire wheel......nevermind).

I'll have to come up with another idea now........
