881 for Sale

Well, it is not a 1962, closer to a 1959. PS pump!! The SN isn't correct, but then the tractor is old enough to have had a complete transmission change by Ford. So who knows!

Yes, updates helped and if the S.O.S. works as it should .It will probably be a good one. But it is still the first power shift transmission put out by any tractor manufacturer. A lot has been learned since then.

Thanks for the info Wayne. I like the tractor because its looks very original and untouched. I'm thinking of offering a bit less than he's asking (mainly cuz the tires). I have a 640 now and the extra power, loader and live pro would be handy. All of that old, caked on oil also makes me wonder.

(quoted from post at 21:29:28 10/03/15) Good looking tractor, wood be great if it had a 4 or 5 speed
Boss

Nope! That would make it junk in my book! The SOS is the only way to fly in models of that ilk. The tractor, on the other hand, doesn't look all that good to me. Plenty of oily dirt everywhere!

Drive the tractor and shift in ALL gears. Engage and disengage PTO. When disengaged the PTO will still spin but can be stopped with a 2x4 or your foot. Hash marks on the shift indicator might mean an earlier model with some freewheeling gears. Recall tracking numbers would be on the opposite side of the bellhousing from the serial numbers.
As stated the can style PS pump might indicate an early model.
Also with loader Rear tires my be loaded and would check valve stems on rear rims for CalC leaks.

Looks very original.

Lots of options.

Check the rims carefully for CaCl damage. They are NLS and good used ones are not easy to find.

Check PS when oil is hot. Check front bolster for wear at axle pin.

Look for evidence of retrofitting transmission.

Should be a good one if hours are correct.

I might pay $3,000 in my area.

Larry,
And here I've been called out for calling
them Jerk O Matics. But if the crash box
trannies can be called junk I might start
using stronger language to voice my
displeasure with those SOS machines.

I can't tell for sure but from the pic it looks like the original over-running type. You can confirm it by seeing if it has engine braking in all speeds. if it free wheels in some I would call it a significantly greater risk than the second gen SOS, which is far more common.
