Here I am again. I cannot get my Ford 860 to go into reverse. It's a 5 speed. I push the shift lever down to where it says 5,1,R and can get it to go in 1st and 5th but cannot seem to get the lever to put it in R. Is there some trick to getting into reverse. The book has nothing on it.
I would appreciate any help I can get with this as I having it running very well and would like to use it.
Also, is it a good idea to put non detergent oil in this 1956 tractor engine?
Thanks.

Can you get it into 3rd? Shove it up and down in neutral a couple of times .Pretty hard top mess up a 5 speed unless something mechanical went wrong

Thanks for the reply. I have egg on my face. I figured it out. Just have to be able to read and follow the directions on top of the transmission cover. I didn't realize the lever could go one more position up. Proves to show you don't need to be smart to live in my house. I do have to let the clutch pedal way out to get the clutch to engage. I think I will lower the clutch lever some so I don't have so much travel. Talk about Armstrong steering!!

Do you have a front end loader and no power steering? It will require good arm strength. But, if you don't it is indicative a problem at the spindles, (lower thrust bearing) or in the steering box. Here's a link that might help. If it doesn't search the archive under "hard steering".
Hard Steering

Yes, no power steering. I lubed everything the book showed. I made sure the steering box was full of oil. I could not find the oil level plug on the steering box so I just added fresh oil.
Thanks for your help and reply. Oh, I do have a Wagner FEL on it. That's why I got the tractor. I live in Hooterville and the rains do a good job of washing out the road to my house.
