Anyone out there (Hobo) care to share with me the tips and tricks for setting up the Holley updraft on a '68 3400 gasser 158CID?

Why does that stupid piston pump assembly get stuck in the bore etc?

Thanks

The vacuum operated accelerator pump can become non-functional due to dirt in the fuel and/or corrosion resulting from condensation in the fuel.

The Holley is sensitive to float setting. Be careful to properly set the float.

The vacuum operated accelerator pump will function best if the vacuum spark advance system is functioning properly.

Cleck for vibration induced wear in the float pivot pin bores. Proper float setting cannot be reliably achieved if the bores are worn.

Thanks Dean, I set the float to the "hillside correction" height of 7/8" with a combination square and it was running not good - coughing, chuffing, rich black sooty plugs.

Took it apart and re-cleaned it, reset the float to the 25mm (63/64") "without hillside correction" using a digital caliper.

Still not running good.

Plugs are Autolite 405 (IIRC) and they were new with the rebuild 4 hrs ago but I've bead blasted them 3 times now.

Points were too tight (.016") reset to .025" but noticed one of the screws is stripped and can only be tightened "till it slips then back off till it won't fall out" so the breaker plate is going to need pulled and repaired.

Lastly, I set initial timing at 2* but I never disconnected the vac line or checked to see if the vac advance is working.

1) Search function top right on modern view.

2) Search for Keywords: holley

3) Search for Author: Hobo,NC

4) Forum: Ford

I get 21 hits on info/help on Holleys read thru them maybe you will find something that may help you...

Thanks Hobo, I didn't realize you could use word AND author in a search. Searching Holley I found 66 which I started reading and got interrupted.

Had to do it twice, first result showed "no matches" now I've got 22 to check out. Anything in the archives I should review?

Dean & Hobo, in re-reading the search results posts I have gleaned:

1. float height important - my question, do I measure to the carb body or include the gasket in the measurement?

2. Accelerator piston assembly - needs to be free & CLEAN. (Siezed when I started this project, re-stuck after initial clean, not too tight but not moving freely, bore & piston were polished with a dremel and white jewelers rouge).

3. Carb kit - the carton in the box of parts that came with this tractor is a Sparex kit.

4. Gaskets - carb currently has one-piece gasket for bowl & metering assembly. Is there a supposed to be any passages in the gasket? I wonder if the PO put the gasket in upside down? Hobo cuts his own but I was wondering on thickness of gasket material.

5. Pump check ball assembly (& related passage in metering body) - clean and working (flows one way, seals the other)

6. Silly little float hinge pin spring - in and "helping open the float" but in reality dampening vibrations to keep pin bores from elongating. (didn't know to check for play when I was in there, didn't notice anything unusual but will recheck)

Did I miss anything?
