6 volt generator

Hey guys looking for little insight on my generator. With the belt off and I put 6 volts to the generator it will motor. But when I start the tractor and put my meter on the posts. I don't get any voltage coming out of the generator. Bad brushes possibly?

Since it motors it is most likely good but to me that says the V.R. is bad. The V.R. is what tells the generator to charg and if bad it will do what you are having a problem with

Sorry forgot to mention that I installed a brand new voltage regulator and it still had same result. I assumed that what was the problem. But I was wrong. I did polorize the voltage regulator a few times in attempt to get it to read any output voltage without and luck

You polarize the generator not the V.R. Also just because the V.R. is new now days means nothing it could well be bad and if form the land of almost right very likely to be bad

more testing, less buying.

1, make sure you have the correct vreg. it should be for 6v and A circuit.

flip it over.. there should be a bias resistor between field and ground, and none other present.

now.

with belt off, and genny disconnected from all wires.

hook bat hot to armature.. then ground the field.

genny should spin.. if so, hookup the vreg and slip belt back on.

put meter on battery.. should read about 6.3v

start tractor, get to half or so rpm...

now, battery should be 7.something.

if not, jumper ont he regulator from armature to battery.

if voltage comes up on the battery, then the cutout on the vreg is bad.

if still nothing, ALSO jumper field to ground.

with field to ground jumped and armature to battery, voltage to battery should be up.

if not, shut down for one more test, as you may have bad wiring.

you will need an ammeter for this. and you will be wiring directly from armature to ammeter then to battery, and then starting up, now jumper field to ground.. ammeter should show charge.

if no charge.. take gen to doctor.
