Ford 5000 faint oil light

Hi Ford 5000 owners

I purchased a Ford 5000 yesterday. Now as expected everything was perfect when I tested it......however.....

When I started it today the oil light is bright as expected before the tractor was started (cold), then once started it went very faint and eventually disappeared once the engine was hot.

Am I worrying over nothing or should I start looking about.

Thanks in anticipation
Lachlan

Sounds like a bad sender. The oil pressure sender on that tractor is just a pressure activated switch that should open (switch off) when the pressure gets above whatever pressure it's designed for, which I believe is somewhere in the 4 to 6 psi range. So the light should be either on at full brightness or off, it shouldn't ever be "faint". Going to faint before it goes off means that there's something wrong inside the switch itself that's causing there to be some resistance as it moves from on to off.

Larw, for what it would cost, purchasing a new gauge and putting it temporarily on the side of the block where your sender is, would give you a good baseline pressure and peace of mind.

ditto what showcrop said.

I'd snatch the sender out in a hot second and just slap a manual gauge on there and figure out what my cold start, and hot idle pressure range was. if it was good, I'd go buy a new 8$ sender and install it and be happy.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your responses. I'll give the gauge on the block a go to understand the baseline(s).

I really appreciate the help, apologies for a very late response.

agree with the others, get a gauge on there.
on my 5000, since it was so easy...it's right there in the open,
I put in a T and new light sender and a real gauge up near me using an existing bolt to mount it (didn't want to drill any holes in the nice dash)
Then I could always see actual pressure, and the light still worked to catch my eye quickly if a uhoh happened fast.
