NAA hydraulic pump

My hydraulic pump is a making a strange noise and wondering if it is an issue. When the pump is lifting up the 3 point it is quiet but when 3 point is stable it makes a squeaky rattle noise. Maybe like a bearing.

You are lucky, you have a piston pump. Parts are readily available. I wonder if you are hearing a loose gear on the end of the wobble shaft.

These pumps are rebuild-able and well worth the effort. A shop press is needed.

Thanks Kurt - Do you think there is risk in running it this way? I bought the tractor non running and had my first quality seat time brush mowing. Noticed this noise but have not had a NAA before. My common sense mechanics ear suggest I should do something before it forces me to do something. If easy to do I will do exploratory surgery.

I always worry about bad noises. If you ignore it, it will probably fail at the worst possible time and maybe take expensive parts with it. I would check it out.

Have you had a listen with a mechanics stethoscope? A long screw driver will work too. Just put the handle up to your ear and place the blade up to the pump while it is running. If the noise is at the back, it could be the gear. A little farther forward suggests shaft bearings. If near the front, it is probably the thrust bearings on the wobble shaft or a bad piston.

A full rebuild on the pump will run about a $150-$200 and take an afternoon to accomplish. Two things to be aware of. 1. You need a press to press the tapered roller bearing on the shaft. 2. To get to the seal and needle bearings out, you need to remove the tapered bearing cone (race). It will need to be cut out or if you have a welder, a couple of beads will loosen it up so that it falls out.
