I have had fuel starvation problems with this thing since I got it,
It was running on gravity flow.
Part of the problem was the gas tank is full of crud and it's a fairly big job to pull the tank and clean it on these platform jobs.
Put a new inline filter on it and opened the carb a couple of times to inspect but that didn't help.
Last weekend I tried a test tank on top of the fender but still no go.
So this weekend I added a small electric fuel pump to it and tested it that way.
It fired right up and ran great so I put the back blade on it and graded the driveway which was badly rutted.
Kind of a Jerry Rigged looking affair but it ran fine. Next weekend I'm going to put the bush hog on it and for the first time, see what the thing will do.
Test tank holds about 3.5 gallons so I should get a good test on it on that much fuel.
Messing with the back blade got me sick of the SOS.

uess what, you ain't the first person to do this, an old friend of mine that is retired now done the very same thing to his 600 Ford tractor about six years ago and he is still using it like that with tank mounted to the side with electric fuel pump, all he does is plant garden with 2 row planters and uses cultivator with it, said it was cheaper and easier than replacing his tank...
 
Doesn't that model have the fuel pump up front just above and slightly to the left of the water pump? My 3600 runs really crappy without a fuel pump, just can't seem to get enough fuel flow by gravity alone. I was having trouble with vapor lock with the fuel line running alongside the engine on the way to and back from the fuel pump so I put an electric pump on it and bypassed those lines.
 
Kind of unusual.

One does not see too many post 64 4000 row crops.

That said, it will need a functional fuel pump to perform properly.

I had a 66 4000 utility gasoline SOS for awhile. Much prefer the prior models so I sold it. In my opinion, the best thing about it was the later generation SOS with externally accessable oil filter and oil cooler in the radiator tank. Just about bullet proof.

i dislike the platform arangement, but like the narrow front...

if I ever get one.. I might have to do surgery.. :)

Perhaps. But that is not my issue with it.
It's the jerking you get when you throttle up a bit that is annoying.

Yes they are backwards.
I posted about this when I got it that the tires were set way out - too wide to go on my trailer.
I had to hire a tire service to turn them around as I didn't have any tools. They're loaded too.
I'm just experimenting with it still so don't care.

I don't know what the pressure is.
It's a cheap little pump that I borrowed from Kenny. I do have all the correct lines and pump from another tractor but don't care to put it right till I fix or replace the tank.

Yes, this engine is identical to your 3600 as far as the fuel system goes. It was a good system, but they didn't get maintained as it was a PIA to do. Nothing wrong with going electric though, especially if any of the OEM lines, etc are missing.
I have a complete engine, 8 speed and rear end from a 73 4000 I could stick in this tractor but am really trying to learn to love this SOS and maybe keep it original. Time will tell.
It has had numerous fuel and electrical problems (am running on the battery only) so just having it running is a good deal.
Where in MN are you? I live in the Cities and the tractor is in Aitkin.

I'd give the SOS a chance too....but we are who we are.

example...the debates we have on the these boards, of auto vs manual trucks. yep, the auto guys are right..today..they do everything better..but, shrug, I still hate em. manuals for me.

If you decide a SOS isn't for you, there are probably many people right here that would love to have a good one.

'original'....hmmph...correct types will flame me, but if that year and that model came from the factory with a 8-speed....
doesn't make any difference if the factory does it...or you do it.

The inline filter that comes with it is a P.O.S. I had one leak let me take that back it came apart and leaked all the fuel on the ground in the customers shop. The reason I ask about priming is they like to be lower than the tank if not after they set for a week are so they will drain back and not pick up the fuel...
 
Looks good Jerry. What was it doing with the poor fuel flow? (mine is running really erratically) I can't believe that gravity isn't sufficient and it needs the 3-5psi from a pump! But that's the Zenith carb innit? My Holley keeps siezing that stupid piston assembly in the bore of the compensator circuit.

I prefer a manual trans in a car or truck as well, but sadly my knees can no longer handle the daily wear and tear, so I am relegated to automatic transmissions for my daily driving.
 
That is kind of an unusual tractor. I got a grain truck home one time with an outboard fuel tank strapped on the hood when the fuel pump went out. Probably wast DOT......

Yes the pump will pull the fuel.
Before I connected the line to the carb I raised the pump about 16" above the tank and tested it. It easily started pushing fuel so i made the rest of the connections.
Gears, yes this is a Zenith.
On gravity - even with the tank way up on the fender - it kept starving for fuel.
Had to run it with the choke partly out and no power. Dunno why but it runs great now.
I'm beyond messing with a durned Holley. Am not the best carb man to begin with so i just junk them and buy Zeniths. Pricey but it makes a tractor out of it.
NNP, you and I both don't care too much about the original police. This one though is very original so I am loathe to cobble it.
As for auto vs stick in my pickup, for me it's auto all the way. How else can a guy have a donut in one hand, coffee in the other, cell phone cradled to your ear and still shift?

Practical? Maybe not so much.

Grew up here but have lived in the Cities for most of the last 40 years.
 
I really like my platform 5200 Ford. Although its getting harder to climb that high.... ;) and sometimes the tree branches and shed roofs get a little too close....

Kai was a high school classmate of mine, he got married and moved up there to Emily area in the 80s and built log cabins, still does I think, plays in a family band, is strongly against technology..... Neat fella. Was a good friend, we don't keep in touch like we should, but I went to the dark side of Internet communications.... ;)
