Tire Weather Checking

I am replacing all 4 tires on my 640. Is there anything I can do from day one to protect my tires from weather checking? Tractor will be stored indoors and will mostly be a mowing machine so it won't see a lot of mud. I was wondering about wiping them down with STP Son of a Gun or are the tires simply going to split open like I see on so many tractors?

any product that has "petroleum distillants" in it will dry rubber out faster and increase cracking.

This means that most all of the junk sold to make tires shine also makes them dry out and crack faster. this is not a problem on car tires since they are replace every 6 years or sooner.

There are few approved products.. "303" is one that comes to mind that actually protects the rubber from drying and cracking. Problem is that its fairly pricey. keeping tires out of sun will help considerably.

Keep them out of the sun and use the tractor. My 850 had new tires in '02, rears, and it lives outside in the summer, at minimum when not raining, I tarp over the rear tires, its worked well, no weather checking.

'02 to now with no checking, that's pretty good. My tractor is enclosed indoors when not in use. What is this 303 product?

yup.. inside, out of the sub, and proper inflation will be your best bet vs cracking.

they do make tire paint with uv protectors... but i just can't see putting tire paint on a new tire. :)

by and far.. you should get DEcades OF USE OUT OF A TRACTOR TIRE BEFOR ETHE CASING IS SO WORN IT FALLS OFF OR FAILS WHEN REMOVING IT DUE TO BEAD SEPARATION..E TC. ( sorry about caps.. ^%$# phone.. )

What I have on it now still hold air but I can't stand to look at them. They are so hugely weather checked in the treaded area. Technically they'd probably work for years to come but maybe on someone else's tractor. lol.

Lol, I have a couple that MAY be original.

I have a 951 that the rubber is hard and lumpy and chalky like charcoal.. :)

Still rolls :)

I'm pretty sure that the 13.6-38's on my '73 4000 were original up until two years ago when I replaced them. The tread was only down to about 40% of original, but the sidewalls were checked badly and the tread bars were starting to crumble on the edges of the bars.

Also has a lot to do with the type of rubber. some tires will last forever but get harder and harder. Others will start cracking and in a few years have cracks almost through the carcass. some import tires are very very bad.

And that's why I was asking if there is anything I can do from new. These tires are expensive and quality is an unknown. I'd like to give them any help I can from day one.

Oh no, same situation here, but both my tractors work and will never see a parade.
