I bought this backhoe a couple of summers ago and it had bad blow by when I got it and always ran hot. now it has finally died and I have water in the oil. Have the motor down to short block and will hopefully get that out tomorrow. Here is what I could find can someone help me identify the exact model so I can get the correct parts to rebuild the motor.

Engine marking: BM09B
Unit #: 4A23B
Tractor #: c408408
Transmission 3k26
HYD pump 3M12A
Hyd lift 3K31B

Those look to all be date codes,
Yours was built January 23, 1974, second shift

look at the attached site at the tractor model number location and then use the info on the
left side of the page

ok Joe here is what I found stamped on the right side of the block.

DONN6015J

Also this tractor has a single thick solid large beam across the front for the front end. No suspension.

The numbers you are looking for are not on the right side of the engine block. They are stamped into the flat spot on the transmission bell housing the faces up, just above the two larege bolt holes just above and toward he rear of the tractor from the starter. They will probably be hard to see because the loader frame is likely at least partially blocking your view of them. Since yours is a 1974 model, the numbers might also be on a foil sticker on the under side opf the right hood panel, above the battery. Come to think of it, the first set of numbers that you posted look like they cam from that foil sticker. If so, please post the model number from the foil sticker and we can decipher it for you.

With that being said, the numbers from the engine do help a little. DONN6015J is a casting number for a 158 cubic inch engine that was used in both the 2000 and 3000 3 cylinder tractor series.

When you say "Also this tractor has a single thick solid large beam across the front for the front end. No suspension.", are you saying that it has a solid non-adjustable front axle? If so, then it is either a 3400, 3500 or 3550, as those were the only models with solid front axles that ever used that engine. your terminology of "thick solid large beam" sounds more like the 3500 and 3550 front axle.

If you can't find the model number, either stamped into the flat spot or on the foil sticker under the hood, then post some pictures of the tractor. One from the front at a slight angle, including the front axle and one from the rear including the rear axle and we should be able to identify it for you.

Ok I am stuck I cannot for the life of me get this motor out. I am down to the short block and have removed every bolt and nut I can find and the darn thing won't move. I have my other tractor's bucket connected to the block with chains and it won't move one bit. I have never seen so many nuts and bolts holding a motor in my life. Good God! I looked in the ford service manual ( which is one of the most useless manuals I have ever seen) and can't find anything that helps me.

I just thought of something. Do I Need to separate the Tractor? God I hope not I am doing this in my field. If I have to separate it I will have to come along the backhoe and front end loader off the ground to tow it to the garage. I have 10 foot doors but don't if I can get it in there?

HELP! lol

The engine block is a structural member of the tractor frame. The bolster, which is the front axle support, is the front most frame member, then the engine, then the transmission and then the rear axle center housing. The external subframe is just to attach the loader and backhoe to the main frame of the tractor, which is the major components of the tractor itself as I outlined.

So, yes, you have to split the tractor between the engine and transmission, and then unbolt the front bolster from the engine to remove the block. Make sure that you use wooden wedges on top of both sides of the front axle, between the axle and the bolster, to keep the bolster and engine from tipping over when you first split the tractor between the engine and trans.

oh God Sean I will have to get back to you in a couple of weeks this is much bigger project than I thought....lol.... last week took a tranny and motor out of a motorhome and put the tranny into my good motorhome in two days.... this is much bigger...lol

The service manual should have the procedure for splitting the tractor. Depending on which service manual you have, it may not be correct though, since you still haven't given us enough information to tell exactly which model it is, although as I said I am leaning toward either the 3500 or 3550, and the main difference between those two models is the rear axle.

Ok Sean I will try and get a pic of the rear axle tomorrow it is a little difficult to get because the backhoe is in the way
