Thanks soundguy, that makes sense. R goes to idiot light which goes to cool side of switch which will energize when switch is turned on. F goes to hot side of switch or to alt stud which recieves power all the time. I was having a senior moment.....wait, I am a senior....almost. I was letting the fact that I was not getting a charging voltage distort my reasoning and ya'lls advise. If jumping the F to alt does not encourage a charge.....then the alternator may be the fault because the idiot light does work. Then after charging, the current should be prevented from reversing due to the resistance of the light. I'm learning I think.

Thanks again all!

the ignition switch actually prevents the alt from draining thru the excite line when off, since when key is off, the idiot lamp is not hooked to power anymore.

the lamp is there to drop voltage and reduce current on the excite line, since it is also common to the coil...otherwise the excite line would backfeed the coil preventing you from turning the tractor off with the key.
