what I'm calling junction box I meant to call terminal. I have a two screw terminal that receives battery power to one screw and battery power with key switch to other screw. F to charge stud and R to cool side of terminal screw gives me no charge. R to charge stud and F to terminal screw gives me 14.5 but that is contradictory to what should happen so perhaps the alternator is toast. This is a 172, not an N.

application matters not.

Does the battery drain with only the charge stud hooked up?

also.. what are you using as an isolation device?

Battery does not drain with only alternator stud hooked up. I thought I was using my charge light for the isolation but it did not work as expected. As written before, no charge when F hooked to alternator and R hooked to switch. Charging occurs when reversed.

If charge lamp is blown, it wont excite the alt.

With it hooked up correct, when key is on, does lamp light up? Should. Then when running and over 400 rpms lamp should go out.

Now, with it hooked up correctly and running and not charging, jump charge stud to the excite tab , see if that makes it charge.

If so, your isolation/ excite lamp circuit is at fault.

You've got me on the right track. The charging system does not charge and the light is on at startup. When #1 wire is jumped to alt. stud charging begins and lamp goes out. Charging continues throughout idle range but when tractor is turned off then restarted, system does not charge until jumped.
Wires are hooked as follows. Alt. stud to hot side of starter solenoid. #1 wire (R) to indicator lamp then from lamp to cool side of switch. #2 wire (F) to alt. stud.
If i'm understanding the problem is in the isolation circuit. Tractor shuts off when key turned off.
Next step?
thanks

Jmore beat me to it, but yeah.. your excite circuit is insufficient for the alt, and is fine for isolation the other way.

as said. you need more wattage.. either change lamp or scab on a resistor in parallel with the lamp

Lamp too small and not providing enough excite current..try a little larger bulb or parallel the bulb with a 10 Ohm resistor. (GM used 10 Ohm, 6.25Watt resistor in parallel with bulb), 5 to 10 Watt should be fine.

Thanks soundguy, that makes sense. R goes to idiot light which goes to cool side of switch which will energize when switch is turned on. F goes to hot side of switch or to alt stud which recieves power all the time. I was having a senior moment.....wait, I am a senior....almost. I was letting the fact that I was not getting a charging voltage distort my reasoning and ya'lls advise. If jumping the F to alt does not encourage a charge.....then the alternator may be the fault because the idiot light does work. Then after charging, the current should be prevented from reversing due to the resistance of the light. I'm learning I think.

Thanks again all!

the ignition switch actually prevents the alt from draining thru the excite line when off, since when key is off, the idiot lamp is not hooked to power anymore.

the lamp is there to drop voltage and reduce current on the excite line, since it is also common to the coil...otherwise the excite line would backfeed the coil preventing you from turning the tractor off with the key.
