860 hydraulics

I recently acquired a 56 869 ford tractor. I got it running but it has a vacuum leak at the intake/exhaust manifold. Not the problem I need help with. The lever for the 3 point will not move. Evidently the previous owner (mechanically declined) broke the lever trying to move it. My question is, can I remove the cover over the hydraulics without messing something up? Like loosing springs, etc.. I don't have any implements or arms for the 3 point, but if I can get it working I will get them. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The shaft that the touch handle is attached to could be rusted tight in the housing.

Loosen the nut that is on the outer end of the shaft and put lots of penetrating oil around the shaft to housing area

Yes, removing the cover is not a problem. You may need a lift or some help as the cover is heavy for one person to handle. I have seen the problem you have described on quite a few tractors that have come through the shop. The lift quadrant gets rusty where it goes through the cover. Depending on how bad it is broken it will be necessary to remove it clean the rust out and put in either a new part, from this site if available, or a good used part.

If you do not have a service or parts book, it is a good idea to take pictures of the inside of the cover before you start taking it apart so that you've got something to reference when putting it back together.

Good luck

Thanks to everyone for their response. I took the nut off the shaft and have not been able to get the handle and handle mount off. I have heated the piece and soaked it with WD40, as that's what I have and it won't budge. I'm afraid of breaking it so I will continue with the heat/soaking to try to get it off. I will try to find a picture breakdown of the hydraulic area to get an idea of what's inside the case.
Again, thanks for the help.

WD40 is not a good penetrating oil for rusted parts. It was designed to displace water (WD stands for Water Displacement), which helps prevent rust but does not help much for rust that is already there. Use a penetrating oil like PB Blast or Kroil, or make your own by mixing ATF & Acetone at a 50/50 ratio.

Thanks. WD40 was all I had at the time. I live in the country, a good ways for any big city. I took my dog to the vet today and stopped and got some penetrating oil. I will soak it on and off today and try to get it off tomorrow.
