600 series PTO shaft replacement

So my 640 PTo works fine but I have between 1/4" and 3/8" play fore and aft on the shaft. I have a new replacement assembly in hand. From what I have read on these forums, if I park on a steep downhill I should be able to pull the shaft assembly and slide in a new one without fluid loss. Is it really that simple of a swap?
 
You can, to get the fluid level below the opening in the housing for the shaft assembly, its also an ideal time to change the fluid in both hydraulic and differential, inspect what you can see when drained.
 
BZZT.. sorry. doesn't work like that.

this machine has a tranny sump, hyds sump, and a diffy sump.

if you pull the shaft, you will mix hyds and rear sumps.. usually overfilling the rear... which isn't good.

drain the hyds and the rear, then change... save the parking on a hill for an 8-9-2N where it actually WORKS!

Also, when stabbing the shaft in, go easy and support it, as you pass thru a seal inter sump, and you don't want to pop the lip plunging it in.

Knew that was too good to be true! lol. How will I know if I damage the intersump seal?
 
Usually Hyds drains down...( especially noticeable if you use external Hyds and have a bit extra fluid for Sa cyls )
 
So what actually has happened that allows the pto shaft to have so much play? What is the concern with the play if the pto is functioning properly?
