3cyl PS pump followup - pump not making pressure

This is a followup to the 71 2000 Ford 3cyl with disappearing PS fluid. I tore the pump down and installed a YT seal kit. This is the motor mounted pump with integral reservoir. The front seal was definitely loose. I replaced all o rings and reassembled. Did not open the relief valve. It was making good pressure before.

Now it will not make pressure. I removed it and disassembled/reassembled again following the exploded view in the IT FO-31 manual (all I have). Reinstalled and still no pressure.

What can I check next? Can the bearing blocks be installed backwards? There is an item 15, called ring dowel. Did not find one. Is it there in all pump models?

My memory is a little foggy... but I do believe you can install the bearings blocks backwards. All I can suggest to you is that you look very closely at the respective ports in the pump body and the inlet and outlet sides of the bearing blocks. The inlet relief will be larger than the outlet side. So visualize which way the pump turns and remember that the oil follows around the outside of the gears... and that way you should be able to figure out whether or not you have them installed correctly. Other options are a pinched seal on the end plates or simply dirt in the relief valve... That said... it honestly doesn't surprise me very much that it won't work, especially if the bearings are worn bad to begin with...

Did you remember the key for the drive gear when you reassembled?

There were a lot of companies that made replacement pumps over the years that fit that tractor, so if it's not the original pump then that "ring dowel" might not exist.

Hi Rod, I bet that is the issue. I paid no attention to how they went back into the housing. I should have had a sharpie so I could have marked them as they came out. First gear pump I have ever been into... Will get another shot at it in a day or two.

No significant wear noticed, just that the seal was shot. No lateral movement in the shaft at all.

Finally got the pump working. Rod was correct, had to place the grooves in the bearing blocks on the inlet side, both of them.

Also, had to order the lock washer from Messicks. Wow, a $7 washer...must be gold... Probably could have gotten it from a local Ford dealer but fuel would have been twice the cost than the $6.95 shipping. And they had it here the second day after ordering and delivered on a Saturday by Fed-Ex.

Oh well. Now back to using the best little tractor Ford ever made!

As others have said.. if the pump is working ok, A reseal kit fixed the problem. If pump is worn out, a reseal kit will not fix it.

The 40 year old seals crack and you pump fluid into the crank case. Most of the pumps I have resealed had only one seal on the input shaft and the kit came with two, so I put both one one to seal in each direction with good results.

Watching the oil level. Shaft was not at all worn. Kit had a second seal so if I see the level start to rise, I will pull the pump and put in another seal.
