Power Steering on 3 cyl 4000

For lack of a better term, I have a groaning sound in the power steering, intermittently, when I turn to the right or hold the tractor in a straight line. Please tell me it is not the power steering pump and there is an easy "cheap" fix.

I don't know what the problem is. But tell us what year your tractor is and whether you have the old side arm style PS or the new style with integral PS where the power is all done in the steering box.

groaning sound can simply be the fluid squirting through the ports, cavitation, or chattering valves.

first off drain fluid and replace with clean fluid with no water. Make sure filter is in good condition and the hoses are not collapsed. Make sure all connections are tight and no excessive play in valves and ends.

And if its working well, leave it alone till is not working well. ford pumps are very cheap compared to other brands.

IIRC the single cyl its important the nut on the control valve not be over tight as a self locking nut is normally used to allow the valve to stay parallel to the cyl IIRC.

Groaning noise could just be a slight restriction to the flow of the fluid anywhere in the system. I would change the filter and the fluid and as sotxbill said, if it's working fine and giving you good power assist in both directions I would live with the noise until it stopped working correctly.

An after thought here:
Have you greased your front end recently? Inspected it for wear?
A dry or deteriorating thrust bearing or even dry and worn spindle bushings could cause a groaning sound

Two of you spoke about changing the filter. Where is the filter? The pump appears to be gear driven off the front and is self contained, I don't see any place for a filter.

It is working, just noisy, guess I'll leave it alone. Maybe drain and change the fluid and look for a filter.

Thanks.

My 4000 does not have a separate reservoir, the reservoir is in the pump and you need to remove the pump to clean the reservoir and change the filter. My shop manual CD and the Owners Manual CD show different pump configurations.

If you have a 3 cylinder 4000 that has the external steering cylinder along the left side of the tractor and the power steering pump with the integral reservoir then it was mad after 9/30/ 68 and before 4/1/70, as they switched from the pump setup with the separate reservoir above the pump to the pump with the integral reservoir on 10/1/68 and they switched from the system with the external cylinder on the left side of the tractor to the one with the cylinder internal to the steering column on 4/1/70. Here is an exploded parts picture of your pump:

Here is a link to the parts page for that pump listing the part number for the filter, which is identified with the number 23 in the picture:

be REAL CAREFUL you dont strip the bolt when you put the cover back on.. its going into aluminum. use a rubber hammer to push the cover back on, not the bolt. I have stripped several at the cost of a pump or a heli coil. stupid and being in a hurry will cost you money and I am well trained on both.
