Ford 861 Chattering Hydraulics

My hydraulics chatter going up and down. I just bought it and don't know much about its history. This tractor should be able to pick up a post hole driller high enough to get the drill on? It will only pick it off the ground by a foot?? Also what type of fluid is used?

861 should have a dip stick by the right hand heel of your boot. Check the fluid level there. Any UTF fluid that meets the Ford 134D spec will work just fine

before I got overly concerned I'd check the level and condition of the hyd fluid.

might be low and foamy. might be 140wt gear oil.

might be mostly water.

if it doesn't look good.. change it.. it's the cheapest first thing to do.

If it continues to work bad, then there are other tests..

leaks, pressure.. etc.

First time for a reply from me but I hope it meets with approval. By all means change your fluid first. When you check the fluid level make sure your hyd arms are in the raised position. If adding new fluid this might be moot since my tractors Ford 641 and Ford 4000 have fill level holes. If draining and refilling insure your lift is lowered all the way. Refill and watch for fluid to come out of the servicing level hole. Once the fluid starts to come out the hole the area is serviced. Operate your lift system several times then leave raised and check level with the dipstick.

If your fluid level is fine right now then you may have an air leak at the pump or the lines connecting it to your lift area. I have found this out thru experience but nowhere near a pro. Others here will probably have similar and even better answers than me but this is what I encountered with the 641.

your 641 has the EXACT same hyds setup at the posters 861.. they BOTH use a dipstick.

your REAR END has a fill to hole, as well as your TRANNY... HYDS uses a dipstick. naa-thru 64 4 cyl.

9-2-8n were common sump.

Thanks for the input, I added fluid and the chattering stopped, it still wont lift up the arms as high as is capable. i can manually lift the auger higher? As the arms go higher does it need more pressure.

Simply adding fluid was only part of the checks I mentioned. Is level now, and how fluid looked. Max lift height failure could be an adjustment issue with also a worn cam pin. Fiddle with draft lever with load up.. Any changes?

Hi Soundguy,
Good catch and you are correct! Remembering way back to the time we serviced the tractor I recall two things. A plug located on the right side of the tractor just below the foot rest. I remember we had to siphon out quite a bit of fluid too! I think there are times when my brain is on retirement too!

You have the draft/position control in the up position or down. Also could be bent parts or things out of adjustment inside the control has to move thing just right or funny things will happen

I'm sorry, I am green when it comes to this tractor. The manual has been ordered. where is the draft pin located? There is a lever on the right side, and when I release it it lowers the 3 point. Also the Hydraulics are consistently dropping slightly and going back up. Thanks for your help.

Change the fluid it will have water in it. Takes about 2 gallons. Then you will most likely have to pull the lift cover and do a rebuild and adjust the internal linkages ,replace the lift pin it is only a few bucks , you can turn it over if it is not worn too badly.

Draft pin? Not sure what you are speaking of.

Cam follower pin is under the hyd cover.

Small lever I draft lever. Your lift likely needs adjustment and new cam pin

The hunting can be leakdown and circuit regen
