881 LP Help needed

Hi- I posted this in the general section and didn't get much info so I'm hoping there are some LP guys here :). I have a Ford 881 that uses LP. I bought it from my aunt about 5 yrs ago(they bought it new in 62) and it's really been a good little tractor. I've really done nothing to it except change filters and fluids. Doesn't get worked hard but has really been a great starting machine in any kind of weather.

Anyway-I guess now it's decided not to start. I don't know much about LP tractors. I did try a little troubleshooting and it has good spark. I think the diaphragm is bad in the mixer/vaporizer or whatever the right term is. Without the tractor running but the vapor on, if I crack the line between the mixer and the carb, fuel is coming out and from I've read I don't think it should do that.

So I thought I'd probably start with a little rebuild on that mixer part. My guess is it's original- on top of it, it says ALGAS and then MET R FLO under that with a L.A. 21 Calif. under that. Dealer says none of the parts are available and the internet hasn't proved helpful yet so I'm looking for any help anyone can provide on finding parts for this little unit, or if you think I'm going down the wrong path let me know that also or if there some other Impco or other brand of these parts that I need to replace the whole mixer with? Any info or help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

can you post a picture of the carb and regulator? i didn't think any manufacture used Algas as original equipment. Algas was a pressure feed system to the carb. try cranking the engine with the propane turned
off at the tank. while cranking turn propane on and see if then starts. i am not familiar with Fords on propane, i thought they used Century equipment from the factory.

Here's 2 images from the book of a factory LP fuel system

FO-20 shows two different Zenith carbs and two different vaporizer/regs (early & late) one of those has Zenith part numbers associated with it.

Hi - thanks for the replies. I'm having picture download issues. Mine does not match this picture at all- the vaporizer and carb are on the left side of the engine-opposite the plugs. Vaporizer is not visible at all from that side of the engine. After looking at mine more I know at least some of it isn't factory- there's basically pipe between the vaporizer and the carb which I'm pretty sure probably wasn't factory- so it's very possible this vaporizer was put on later. So with that said, does anyone know what vaporizer would work on this size engine? Are they carb specific?

I did try turning it over with the valves closed and then cracking the vapor valve open but it still didn't pop. One thing interesting, when I first came back to try and start it and first tried turning it over with the valves closed, it actually popped a little. So it kind of seems like it might be flooding when you open the valves. That's my theory anyway?

i have never seen a water bath vaporizer like that one in the Ford manual. check on your carb manufacturer if you can. it should have a name on it. replacement Impco carb would be a 55, but you would need the
Impco vaporizer to go with it. i have had truck and tractors flood so bad you have to take the sparkplugs out and crank the engine over to clear everything out. try some starting fluid and see if it will run
on that, then you know it is not flooded. it takes a hot blue spark, not yellow, with good wires to fire propane.
