Hmmm....Now what?

Greetings Forum Chums!
Posting this on the Ford and the 9n,2n,8n boards....I know some of the Gurus follow both....Couple of pics of the 231 Ford I bought at auction....great price....leaking power steering....FIXED!....now....take a look at the filter in the photo....whats wrong with this picture?
don't see how the filter can be removed and serviced without backing out bolts from the housing....it will never clear the manifold....so????
did someone put a longer filter on this??....seems like a huge design flaw if that is correct.....if it came through with a shorter filter...then it is an easy fix.....cut it off and install a shorter filter....thoughts or tips chums!!.....IT and owners manuals have been ordered and are on the way!!....Thanks!!...and Cheers!

there is a shorter filter.. you dont need a lot of room, but you may have to knock the back end of the filter in a bit to give you the clearance you need to get it off. using a crowbar or pry bar and hammer.... do not damage the filter till you have the new short filter in hand.

Can not say for sure on that but I have found many filter you only need an inch or less to remove since the is just the screw on part of the base that has to be undone to remove then tilt and out it comes

That looks like the short filter to me.... it should have a D8NN B486-EA. That is the number for the short on. If it's the longer filter which also fits in place and works fine... the number on that will be D8NN B486-CA... I think this one will come off if you unscrew it though it will be close.

No John....just got the tractor....there is no more than 5/8 inch clearance....I am going to head out tomorrow and get the filter.....just looks tight and I was looking for info...gonna post back tomorrow....You got a 59 861 I thought I read...so do I ....Love the old gal!!

I think the filter is going to clear just fine. They generally are not straight threads meaning there is a bit of taper as you try to get the filter started. That wiggle room is likely just enough of an angle to get the old one out and the new one in.

I'm glad I figured out you meant the white filter before posting; at first glance you are centered on the black one which looks pretty simple to get off. :)

What is a Ford 231? Something industrial, or European? Not familiar with that number.

I would think they have enough room there to wiggle it off, a lot of filters have a real short stub to screw on? Good question tho, at least you think before you act, and get into troubles. ;)

The Ford 231 was the low center of gravity (LCG) model that replaced the 2110 LCG (not to be confused with the later 4 cylinder 2110 made by Shibaura for Ford) when the x600 ag series came out in 1975.

Hi Paul.....I got educated real fast by the forum chums.....basically it is a 2110....2310....2600....Mine was originally a LCG tractor...(Low Center of Gravity)...with wide 24 inch tires on the back....the former owner put a 2600 front end on and 28 inch tires....go figure!....so it was a 231...now a 2310 I guess!

Main difference between the 231 and 2600 was the front axle spindle height and the rear tire heights, so if both of those were changed then it's basically a 2600 now.
