Ford 420 tractor with FEL 735 (component #19-638)

I have a 1978 Ford 420 Industrial Tractor with factory Ford Front End Loader 735 component # 19-638 with a bad Right bucket cylinder. It leaked and was not a simple fix of the seals. It leaked because abuse led to bent rod and damaged gland and nut. So I could keep tinkering with the tractor till I find another matching cylinder, or the money to fix the original one I have I put a bypass hose on it. I know it is not a permanent solution and I don't even want to use the bucket portion of the FEL until it's fixed right, but I still need to use the lift portion to get the bucket off the ground to use the tractor. My question at the moment is - am I doing any damage to the pump, cylinders, or any other vital structures by running it this way?

Thanks in advance!

Can't quite tell what you did to "bypass" the bad cylinder, but it looks like you looped the two disconnected lines to each other, which is fine and won't hurt anything, but the bucket will be limp, in that the other cylinder won't have any ability to keep the bucket from flipping around due to gravity or momentum.

Since each side of the two cylinders were originally tied to the corresponding side of the other cylinder via a Tee, you should have been fine just plugging the two lines that were connected to the cylinder that you removed. That would keep your ability to move the bucket and not have it flop around on you, but you still wouldn't want to lift much weight with just one cylinder as the bucket might warp on you.

Thanks Sean! Thanks for the reassurance that it
won't currently screw things up. Now where would I
find what, to take off that loop, and plug each of the
lines so it might be a little more usable and not as
limp? Isn't it a special pipe thread that I'd have to
get at a specialty store?

agree with Sean, should be able to just plug the lines, can't help you with the threads.....old tractors...who knows.

loader looks pretty heavy duty, could probably use it when plugged....just don't go crazy.
I had a Ford loader with only one bucket cylinder..on the right.
Thought it was owner modded, til I found the manual...nope only one cylinder from Ford....not really their best idea.
Ford 727 I think it was.

The parts site shows those connectors are 7/8"-13 37 degree flare fittings, which you should be able to find a plug for. JIC-14 should fit. Worst case use two hoses to connect them together with a ball valve in the middle to shut off the flow.

Wow! You made it incredibly easy! If I can't find
them locally I'll order them. Thanks again!
This forum is great for what you guys know and are
so helpful!

And thanks to NoNewParts, too!

Also.. any cyl that is same length, and has the correct ends will work.. does not have to be an exact match, but should be as close as possible and same diameter, so that both cyl pull and push equally.
