Well here goes, tractor was not hitting on 3rd and 4th plugs, i mentioned in last post that spark was weak at points, and no fire on plug wires to 3 and 4. When i got in from work i put the Pertronix ignition in the distributor and removed the ceramic resistor, also put a new Napa coil on (IC14SB), the old tractor fired right up like never before and all 4 plugs are firing now, runs strong. Gave $1750 for this tractor and all rubber is very good, steering is tight, should have good service out of it, will be used with a John Deere sickle mower to cut around farm ponds.

I think the old coil was my problem the whole time, reason I'm thinking this is years ago I had an old Ferguson 30 with the same symptoms that had me pulling my hair out and I parked that tractor for about a year and one day took the resistor off and put a Napa coil on it and all symptoms vanished and tractor never missed a lick from that point, the Ferguson was still on points and condenser then with weak spark like this 4000. Very same thing with both tractors.......

5 cents says that the singular action of removing the resistor would have fixed the old system, too. :)

grayrider,

I recently bought a 1963 Ford 4000 but it's a diesel version. The throttle control is very loose. It won't hold in one place without my constantly pulling it back into position.

I have no idea if the throttle control on the gas version is the same as on the diesel version, but do you have any trouble keeping your throttle in the position where you want it? There isn't a typical friction pad on mine. It has a "spider" like washer that is supposed to serve that function, but I think I need a new one. I haven't torn into it yet, but I need to do so soon.

Otherwise, I like my "new" tractor.

My throttle stays put, I don't know if there is a difference between the gas and diesel but suspect they are the same. I'll look at mine tomorrow evening and see what it looks like, I would imagine its just like my old 601 Ford

This should have been posted to a new thread with appropriate topic for better visibility. However, your friction disc is missing, or the bellcrank assy. is not tight enough. While it's slightly different than the gasoline model, your diesel does have one. http://www.messicks.com/nh/60169 10th tab down under 02 Fuel System.

In looking at this parts schematic, I notice that someone has messed with your assembly in the past. You have a gasoline engine spring "spider" rather than a diesel one, as well.

Good deal. Nice tractor.
As said, the trouble in the first place was likely that resistor. But now you will not have to touch your distributor again for a looong time.
