FORD 861 - Trouble running Keeps dying.

I've got a Ford 861. It's typically been a bit "smoky" which I've posted questions on before. It sees limited farm use, but has always run pretty reliably. Yesterday I went to disc up a field and in the middle of running it, it died, almost as if it had run out of gas. (Tank was 1/2 full with new gas). I also noticed before it died that I was having to give it more throttle than typical to keep it running. After leaving it for a bit, I started it back up (started on first push...), and it ran for a couple minutes and then died again. It continued this as I drove it back to the barn...

Any thoughts on where to start looking for a problem? Thanks.

you always check for spark at stall.

On yours, I would bet a fuel stoppage. perhaps even tank vacume.

next time it starts to die, apply some choke.. if it helps, stop, open tank cap slowly and see if that helps.

if not and it stalls, check spark.

It did seem like choking it helped a bit. Where would I look for a fuel stoppage?

THANKS for the quick reply.

um.. in the fuel delivery system...

you know.. betweent he tank and carb.

could be at the strainer above the valve, or the screen in the sediment bowl, gunk in the bowl, or gunk in the banjo bolt.. etc.

past that, might even be a blocked flaot valve IN the carb, preventing fuel from getting in.. stuck 'up' float, etc.

I would start by pulling the carb drain plug out of the bottom of the carb. You should get a steady flow of gas for a few minutes. Catch the gas to check for dirt/rust etc. The flow should fill a pint jar in just a few minutes. If it does not work your way back till you find the clog. Also try that with the cap on and off. If the tank vent is clogged it can cause a flow problem

Ok. So here's an update. Any more advice from you all is MUCH appreciated.

Before using the tractor I checked the sediment bowl. Looked pretty clean (considering it's probably been a LONG time since it's been touched). There was a very small amount of stuff in it, but not much. Cleaned it out. Checked inside of tank. Tank looked good. Pulled the fuel line off where it enters the sediment bowl. Fuel seemed to flow fine / really fast. Hooked everything back up.

Ran the tractor for at least 45 minutes (maybe longer without a single issue). Decided to take a break. A few hours later came back to do some more. Added some more (new) fuel. Started up. Tractor ran for probably 5 minutes and then died. Choking tractor when it was dying did not make a difference. It wouldn't restart. Let it sit for another hour. Started up. Was able to run it for long enough to get it back to the barn.

I did notice the the fuel shutoff valve is leaking. Not sure if that would make any kind of difference.

I did not check spark... don't know how, but will look into it and try that next. Thanks again.

Thanks for any help.
