which oil to use?

A friend of mine just bought a Ford Workmaster so I guess that makes it a 601 from what I can tell?

Anyway, I need to change the oil but not sure what to replace it with. I'm guessing it originally used straight 30w? What is recommended now? I don't know the history so I'm not sure how well it was maintained or how clean/sludgy the insides are.

Thanks in advance.

(quoted from post at 09:41:36 08/22/15) I use Rotella 15W40 in my 2N year round in central/upstate ny

me 3
All my old tractors get the 15w-40 diesel rated oil year-round.
They all seem to like it fine...not that I asked em..lol..eat it and like it.
I did consider a lighter grade in hard winter up here, but in January..it don't matter..if it's dino oil...it's mud, at those temps.
and I [i:f150162e2a]sure[/i:f150162e2a] ain't putting synthetic in 20 old tractors $
point the salamander at em, get em started..let em warm up...ugh, it's getting closer

Well that would make it easier since his other tractors are diesel Kubotas. Keep it simple and all the same.

I have a 601 workmaster. The engine is fairly worn on mine, there is some smoking, and it seems a little weak. So I got GTX high mileage it was either 10-40 or 15-40. should hold about 5 quarts I believe. Plus I dont hardly even use my tractor in the winter.

I use 15W40 diesel spec oil year around in all of my tractors, gasoline or diesel.

Straight 30 weight would be proper in warm climates. This is a flat tappet solid lifter engine. Because of this I run the same exact oil and oil filter as I run on my 292 Y8 of the same vintage. Valvoline 20w50 VR1 racing oil, not only does I have higher levels of zinc which is great for flat tappet engines but the 20w50 I found out is loved by solid lifter engines as it has a higher shear than conventional 10w30 that most people use so it cushions the lifters a lot better.

But in reality you can run just about anything you want, at the time hot climates always got straight 30 weight oil but there was also zinc in the oil as an anti wear additive so you might want to take that into consideration.
