This Ford Industrial is coming up for auction close to me in a few months. I wouldn't mind having it to use around the shop but I know next to nothing about
these tractors. I know I have heard that the early ones had a weak cable operated steering system. I can't be sure by the picture if it is a gas or a diesel
which really doesn't matter to me. The man that owned it passed away some years ago and had quite a large salvage yard full tractors and equipment down in
Sebring Florida. I would be afraid to pay much more than scrap price for it as it looks like it has been sitting for some time. Looking for the experts
thoughts on this one. You can see the rest of the items at Kincaid Auctions here in Florida just Google it. Thanks

That"s an old 1800 series Ford Industrial built mid 50"s to 1964
They came several ways-
1811. Select-O-Speed, no PTO or hydraulics
1821: Four-speed, no PTO or hydraulics
1841: Four-speed with PTO and hydraulics
1871: Select-O-Speed with PTO and hydraulics
1881: Select-O-Speed with multi-speed PTO and hydraulics

won't be many bargains. jimmy was a member of the Florida Flywheelers and known all over Florida. He has brothers in the business and things have been selling for years. A good guy who collected more than he could sell.

That looks to be a diesel. Most likely a 172, but could have been swapped out to the 144 or 192 over the years. Pretty decent engine as long as it wasn't sprayed to death with ether.

Yeah that's what I kinda figured. I met him years ago when I worked for a friend of mine that was also in the same business. Isn't a lot left of the stuff he had. Never spent a lot of time with him at the Flywheelers but did talk with him a few times. I might go to the sale just to see what the rust brings. Only about an hour away from me

The 1801's(1958-60 red/gray) and 4040's(1961-62 red/yellow) had cable steering, this one has the link steering so It looks to be a 4140(63-65 blue/yellow). The diesel was more common in the later ones as well. All the Heavy Duty Industrial's (1801,4040,4140) run a 172 cubic inch engine(either gas or diesel). Check the frame by the bend for cracks, that a common place for them to crack and more so if it had the backhoe with it. They had the option of the 713 or 723 ford(10-14ft) as well as the Sherman black panther(12ft)backhoes.But it's a real workhorse and they always seems to want to run. On the pad behind/above the starter are some numbers that will tell the model and serial number (IE 41405S 144256). The radiator will have a date that will give a rough time frame of when the tractor was build (IE 12/63).

4- 4000
1 build after 1963
40 hd non-adj axle
5 (tells the trans and if 3 point and hyd are included)
S - would be if it had the option Sherman transmission (Cobo or Reverser) N/A on SOS Tran(1/1959)

144256 this number would tell the month and year that the tractor was build

12- DEC
63 1963

if it's a 1801

if it was 1801, series would be 1801 (it's the 801 plus a 1000) and the model would be either (1811,1821,1841,1871,1881). They never made a 1851 or 1861 as the 5 speed was not consideration suitable for this tractor.
Best of luck

Just acquired a Ford 1801 Industrial that originally had a select-o-speed but was apparently converted to a 4-speed manual tranny. The numbers above and behind the starter are 631 above <>119348<>. Can anyone tell me what these represent? It has a 712 Ford loader, pto and 3-point hitch. Someone painted it with ugly industrial yellow. It was originally yellow hood with blue engine...Does not have cable steering. The current rear diff was originally red. Haven't figured how to upload photo...

Since those two numbers are stamped into the transmission bell housing, they only tell you about the tractor that the transmission was originally part of when it left the factory.

The 631 means that the transmission was originally in a 631 model tractor. The 631 was a model in the 601 tractor series that had a 4 speed transmission and 3 point lift but no PTO. The other number, <>119348<>, is the serial number of that 631 tractor that the transmission was on when it left the factory, which would have made it a 1960 year 631 tractor.

Thanks Sean, its a start. The tractor does have a PTO that works. I'm guessing we'll never be able to piece together what all was pieced together but as long as it runs and I can get parts, I'm happy...Thanks again.
