Ford 960 puller finished

Wanted to share a picture of the 960 puller we just finished up. Hope to get to give it a try on Saturday.

Looks good. Without the top cover and 3pt you should be able to get into the 3500 lb class. Look like a '55 with the late '57 hood decal. Love the high rims. Good luck at the pull. Let us know how it goes.

I was gonna say a 900 isn't the best traction machine for pulling with the smaller wheels, but it looks like you addressed that.

Looks nice! Wish my 960 got the attention it deserves to look half that good.

Looks great! Mine is a 55 with 15.5/X 38s. The rims are 16" and still pretty heavy. It weighs between 3480 and 3600 with me on it and no weights. On 15.5s it should be close to 3.5MPH at 2940 rpm and no slip in 1st gear.

I am able to stay under 3.5 in second on 15.5s. Can't tell you RPMs at the moment, but just slightly off full throttle.

Thanks for all the compliments. Hope we can get in the 3500lb with it. Used to run a 961 with the same setup and couldn't get it that light but I think the one piece pedestal should be lighter. Its the same 172 motor we ran in the 961 since I had done some head work to it so we swapped them. The 961 has a 2 row picker on it so we decided to put this one together to pull for a change.

We always ran 3.5 mph with the 961 in 1st and could set the horn for a ways and then not have to worry about it. We are turning the rpms pretty tight and we always had good luck with it so it won't be a totally new ballgame.

Good eye Kirk, it is a 55 but I always liked the look of the powermaster decals on the 57's so I put them on it. I am usually particular on making things match the year but figured it didn't matter as much since it was a puller and has pieces from several different places. We always figure if our stuff doesn't pull good at least it will look good.

You should do good with that rig in the 3500 lb class. I do good with my 950 in that class usually taking first or secomd

hey Kirk, do you know Roger Elwood? he is at the far western edge of CT and has a bunch of Fords.

No I don't know him. I know of him and was hoping to see his Elenco at this past ford fordson show. I believe he pulls
with Archie Tanner up there.

I thought perhaps you might make it to some of the same pulls. I've been down to his place three times. great Ford collection but he pulls with a Farmall now. He has been up to Haverhill MA twice for the New England Championships that my buddy puts on. He pulls a lot with a fellow that has a very stout 960, whose name I can never remember. The two of them clean house down in FL in the winter.

looks great
I've always thought Fords idea of 28's on a NF RC was wrong.
too short, kind of defeats the whole idea kind of thing.
on my 4cyl 4000 NF RC (not a puller) I went with 16.9-28's
to get some height back there. Height looks better, but they are [i:877309d71e]fat[/i:877309d71e].
Guess I should catch up with you pullers to get some rims so I can use 38's or 36's.
tall and skinny...hey, it's a RC

WOW! I have to get below 2000 RPM in 2nd to keep the horn from blowing at 4 MPH. It will go close to 5.5 to 5.6 wide open without slip.

I have always wondered if there are different ring and pinions for 900s

Ive run 16.9-28s and 16.9 x 30s, eventually went to 15.5 x 38s since a lot places I pull don't allow the 16.9 width.

Looks nice. We are limited to 13.6-38s in the classes around here at 3.5 mph. They are starting a new 5mph class that is allowed up to 18.4-38s. Might try to get there someday. I seen in an old post you had more cubic inches, what did you do to get that.

It's bored and stroked. 4.165 X 4.70 with some head work. Welded up steel crank from a 144 diesel.
It's in the stock 172 block that has been resleeved and hardblocked to the water pump hole. I have pulled it up to 4250 in 3rd gear, haven't killed it yet! I pull 4 MPH in 2nd gear. usually 3750,4000,&4500. I'm currently researching gearing Id like to have a gear about 13:1

Got to hook Saturday night. Not disappointed with the first pass on the tractor. Got 2nd in 4500 lb 3.5mph. Got beat by a Farmall M that had the cast centers and 15.5 38s on it. Not sure how we was able to weigh 4500 but oh well. Also got to run the 9000 and got a couple 2nds with it but was running against some pretty hot stuff. All in all it was a pretty good night

At least they know that the Fords are there.

Pit Crew, I read you have gotten all the engine mods done. looks good. Where do you get a set of centers for a 38" rim for these. I bet 13.6's will be tough in the 4500 with these.

Im running 15.5 x 38 using 16" 9 bolt wheels and adapter plates made by a local machine shop.

i'd like to know how 9000puller made the ones on his tractor, they look slick.

They are nine bolt wheels and then we cut the center out and put in the middle of some 8n centers. Tacked them up and then bolted them on and made sure they stayed strait while we welded them up. Done a little body work and they look like they were factory.

I may have to try that. I need another set of wheels. I was going to try what my cousin did. Centers off Massey 38" spinouts and some brackets.
