671 pto brake

I'm fixing up a Ford 671 and want to know how difficult it is to work on the pto brake. The pto spins after disengaging it, but not under power. (No I won't stick a 2x4 against it to check.). It isn't a big deal with my bush hog, but I want to hook a sickle mower to it for my ditches and would prefer it to shut off completely when I turn it off. Any one ever done this on a 6X1? Thanks.

Thanks for the help gentlemen. I'm sure I can do a little engineering and get what I need.

As for the 2x4, too many years of my grandfather warning me about pto's, so I steer clear of putting anything in there. I've seen too many close calls with my father not listening to my grandfather. Grandpa was the cautious one and he died in a farm accident about 20 years ago (non pto related).

hand or boot or rope or clothing to a pto? = bad / not reccomended.

a load like a 2/4 to apply pressure to a pto... not too much of a problem.

keeps you away, and it's not attached to you.. so you don't get pulled in y it,a nd due to size / shape, etc.. 2x4's don't usually get wrapped around pto shafts... ;)

be safe. if the 2x4 test isn't comfortable, a static load like your mower, attached, before starting, will tell you if it is powered or parasitic.

even if the PTO was stuck on, the board just bounces off. mine was stuck on when I bought it, you don't even want to know how many times I bounced a 4x4 off the pto shaft praying it would stop spinning

Once I knew my PTO was working properly by testing it with a board, I even stopped it just by grabbing it. Yes I put my hand down and grabbed it. I'm still here, with all 10 fingers to boot

I would be curious to see what kind of pto brake you engineer

I don't think I want to engineer anything internally. Probably something similar to a brake band in a casing around the tractor edge of the pto
shaft with a simple brake line running up to a lever under the seat or something.

I use my 971 for various PTO jobs regularly. When properly adjusted, the amount of force generated by that shaft turning is not capable of hurting anything. If you wanted to commit suicide by feeding your necktie into it you would die of starvation before asphyxiation. Cowboy up and push a 2x4 against it to assess how much force it has. If you are still worried about it then, trade it in.

Like I said I'd be interested to see what you come up with. With my cutter driveshaft hooked to the PTO, there is very little room for anything else.

Joe, you are right. There is no room for anything larger than 10# fishing line in there.
