I just pulled a 63 Ford 4000 gas burner out of my barn that I was storing for a neighboring family for the past 8 months, I bought the tractor last week when the neighbor's estate was settled. Put a fresh battery in it and believe I have a short somewhere, I turn the key on and depress starter button and solenoid makes a single click. Have cleaned the ground cable connection and also cleaned all other connections on solenoid and starter. Any suggestions would be appreciated on what else to look for ..........

If the solenoid goes click and there's no smoke then its an 'open' not a short. I bet the solenoid internal contacts are used up
or dirty. While holding the starter button have someone rap on the starter with a hammer. Sometimes works wonders. Could also be
wasted starter brushes.

I'm thinking solenoid too, I bought a new one this evening and bolted it on and as I was tightening the positive cable on top post of the Chinese made solenoid the dang plastic housing broke loose from the metal bracket rendering the new solenoid useless, gonna see if I can get tractor parts dealer to replace it tomorrow and try again. I bought one for a Ford pickup Saturday at an Advance Auto Parts and took it back, looked identical to the one that was on the 4000 but it wouldn't even click when I put it on,

You must hold the solenoid terminal with a tappet (thin) wrench when tightening the terminal nut.

Failure to do so while tightening the nut will damage the solenoid, starter, etc., just about every time.

was holding it, the el cheapo just cracked and broke away from the mounting bracket, will buy another one tomorrow if they won't give me a replacement and try it again, hope that's all the old workhorse needs.....

I'm going to town and get one after lunch and will post back, been putting up barb wire fence in this south Alabama humidity all morning, bought tuckered out......
