Rear crank seal lip direction?

I am fighting a bad rear seal leak on my 172 gas after a rebuild. The rear cap has a slot for a rope seal as well as a slot for the rubber two piece seal with lip. My questions are - which direction should lip on seal face, and is it possible to shim out rope seal to make stronger contact with crank? The oil flow is from crank, not vertical cap seals.

One other question. Should I have used a RV sealant between the vertical wedges and the rope seal? And is the lip seal in the picture facing the correct way?
Thanks

You are getting carried away with seals. There should not be a seal in the slot you have the rope seal in. There has to be room for oil to pass the bearing to get away and back to sump.. Either use the rope seal or the lip sale..I believe you have the lip seal installed the right direction. Yes ,I would use a little silicone to seal the side seals.

Forgot to mention, the lip seal should have a 3/8 inch or so stagger to the bearing to block split.

I have never stagger them and probably never will... I have done my fair share and never understood WHY you would stagger them...

I guess the reason I have installed them staggered is that's the way Ford originally put them together. Since I have seen several engines apart for the first time, 55 or so years ago, That's the way we found them. 1961, maybe?? Just before the blue one's anyway.

Victor Reinz makes a kit that has a long applicator to go on the silicone seal tube, that reaches down into the bottom of the grooves for the wedges. I will use it next time because I had a tough time to get the rods in beside the wedges.

I have been into my share of virgins they were not staggered unless they turned in the bore... I know a good Ford engine man are 2 they do stagger them I just don't see a reason to but if that's what you do goffer'it...

On some Ford engines they added a pin to stake the rear seal in place once its assy... 351 M 400 engines were bad to spin the 2 piece seal...

Some good tips
