wiring up amp gauge

I should know this but my 621 is 12volt and never had a amp gauge where do you hook up the - and + wirer. don't want to guess it wrong. Thanks.

ut the wire running from battery cable side of start solenoid to the BATT terminal of the voltage regulator and connect the two cut ends , one to each ammeter terminal. If it reads backwards, reverse thee two ammeter connections.
 
How do you know if it's connected backwards? For example, my 640 has a new battery but shows negative amps when charging. Don't know if I have the meter backwards or if the charging system isn't working right. I'm electrically challenged. Thanks

ngine stopped (no gen/alt turning), turn on some load, such as lights & it should show a discharge. If load makes it show charge then it is backwards.
