how does a ford 601 workmaster stack up against a ferguson to-35? consider both tractors in same condition.

Depends on which model within the 601 series that you're talking about and what tasks you need to perform.

The plain TO-35 is within a hp or two of any of the 601 series tractors in all respects (engine, drawbar, PTO).

The regular TO-35 did not have live PTO. The 641 and 651 did not have live PTO either. The 661 had live PTO, and the 671 & 681 had independent PTO. There was a TO-35 deluxe that had live PTO.

For slow ground speed in conjunction with PTO driven implements, the TO-35 has slower gearing than the 641, 651 and 661, but the S-O-S transmission on the 671 & 681 can get you even slower speeds than the TO-35.
 

I had the MF 35 with the Perkins 3 cyl diesel and the deluxe with the Continental (as I recall) gas with remotes and PS. I have a 2000 which is just a blue 600 series. I liked the MF 35D best but the clutch springs with the live PTO was just too much for my left knee. Traded it in with a couple of others for my current Branson.
 
I have a 35 and a 640 and use both incessantly. Both are 12V and I don't know whether the 35 started that way. The 35 has the 4 cylinder continental gas. 35 does not have live hydraulics, or at least mine doesn't. Clutch has to be in for the lift to raise. 640 has live hydraulics. Thats my biggest beef with the 35. Other than that I really like the 35 and probably will sell the 640. The low ground speed of the 35 lets me use a tiller. High range is scary fast.

If that condition will require major repair/replacement,the 35 will cost consideriably more. Like others mentioned,the additional ground speeds give the 35 a nice touch. Ahh but the 601 was available with sherman which is even nicer.
