4000, 3 cyl diesel power steering connections

I have a leak in the power steering pump connections. Connections leak badly (spray) when steering is full left or right(under full pressure). Doesn't leak when going straight or slight turn. It appears as if there is a banjo type fitting where the line goes into the pump, it serves as a union/elbow. I have tried to tighten the lines but I think it is that fitting that serves as a union and elbow. Can't find a diagram of the fittings in the service manual that I have, so don't know the name of the part or part number.

No banjo fittings from factory, which might explain why you can't find it in the service manual. Can you post any pics of what you're dealing with here?

I hope you can view this picture. I believe the elbow fitting is the one that is leaking.

There is a oring under nut/washer. -906-90 in oring p/n. Fitting is screwed in to deep to. Needs backed out a turn maybe 2 when put back in. The brass may also be leaking.

Two comments to start with: 1) that's not a banjo fitting, and 2), it's not factory. Someone added a fitting at some point in time. That brass connector should not be there.

If it's leaking where the fitting screws into the pump, you likely just need an o-ring. This should show up in the NH parts catalog, or else any hydraulic shop can get you what you need. I'm pretty sure it's a "dash 6" fitting size.

If it's leaking elsewhere, and tightening doesn't help, then you need to replace the fitting.

I disagree about that elbow fitting being screwed in too far. The industry accepted method for installing a 45 or 90 degree o-ring base fitting is to tighten it until it bottoms out, and then rotate it counterclockwise (less than one turn) to position it where you need it. Screwing that one out two full turns isn't going to leave much thread penetration.

the fitting into the pump..... should have a small flat washer and then the oring above that. I cant see the oring.. or maybe I cant see the washer.. in the photograph.

It is not leaking where the fitting screws into the pump, it is leaking in the elbow fitting, I believe. The elbow fitting rotates freely and I think that is where it is leaking. What is the elbow fitting called and is there a part number? The biggest nut is part of that fitting. I will have to get my wife to hold steering wheel hard into the stop to get it to leak (spray), then I will be able to tell exactly where the leak is.

As I said earlier, the brass portion of that fitting doesn't belong there. Stated another way, there is an extra part that doesn't belong.

Assuming the steel tube is original, you need item #37.

After getting the right sized wrench I was able to tighten things up. I have a feeling my leak will have disappeared, will know for sure the next time I use it. I'll bet somebody changed or repaired the pump and put that fitting in rather than an regular elbow.

Thanks to all!!!!! Finally as simple fix! I hope

THAT fitting is made of gold.. at least last time I purchased one. It was about 50 bucks and that was over 10 years ago.
