pertronix ignition clearance

So I installed the pertronix electronic ignition along with all the updates to my 641. First crank it started right up and ran beautifully. After about 2 hours of total run tim I was doing some final adjustments to the carb standing back listening to the engine and all of a sudden it sputters out. I tried to start it back (nothing). I trace my voltage all the way to the plugs. No spark! Pulled the cap rotor and dust cap and what do I see? The dust cover was actually touching the top of the rotating magnet of the electronic ignition kit and melted the bottom of the dust cap and wore a serious groove in the top of the magnet. So there was obviously a clearance issue that I was unaware of. Has anyone else had this problem? This sucks since I have to purchase another ign unit (crap there goes another $90).

We had the same problem... if you cut a hole in your plastic dust cover it eliminates any chance of anything rubbing or overheating. We have a fleet of about 7 old ford tractors, each with a Pertronix ignition. One overheated and quit once. We used a die grinder and buzzed a hole in the dust cover bigger than the magnetic sleeve & haven't had a problem since.

I put a 1244A Pertronics in my 51 Ford 8n with side mount distributor. Had same problem of dust cap not seating. Called Pertronix tech help line and was told to file off the top of the magnet ring. I did and dust cover seats ok and Pertronics has been working great. Call Pertronix (909-547-9058) for your model

I had a little interference with my 960. I took a little off the underside of the dust cap, with the Dremel.
