801 6 volt generator

How do you test the generator? I keep having to jump start the tractor. Used a voltmeter on the battery and is is reading 5.85 volts. Close... I can't get any readings off either posts on the generator. I'm grounding to the frame, so I figure that I should be getting something. There is a plate on the generator saying that it was rebuilt, but it's been so long ago they only had the phone number without the area code. Lol, so I figure it's been at least 30 years ago. Thanks for the help. Russ, in Kansas.

Ps, it has a loader on it, so either the battery or the generator is going to be chore to change.

Plus hard to work on up side down LOL. With it not running that battery should read 6.3 volts give or take bit and running it should read 7 plus volts if the generator is working as it should. You can also do a motor test. Loosen the fan belt and hook up a battery to the generator and see if it motors. If it does not it is not any good if it does it is good but the V.R maybe bad

Hope you don't haul your tractor loaded like that, you're likely to bend the frame and the front axle, and your tongue load has to exceed the hitch capacity.Just an observation.

Slip belt off as old said.

Remove field wire.

Jump bat hit to arm and field. If she spins, out field wire on and belt and start tractor, get to 2/3 throttle and test bat again.

If nada, then jumper bat to arm, if this brings volts up, vreg is bad. If still nada, jump arm to fuel as well, if this works, vreg is bad.

If she motors, but wont charge with the vreg jumped out in the above tests, post back. You may have more wirei g to bypass to test
