Need advise on 12 volt conversion

Well my 871 6 volt battery is getting weak so rather than replace it I think I wanna go 12 volt.

Now here's my question- is it possible to use the 12 volt generator and voltage regulator off a diesel model to make my 12 gas 12 volt but maintain the original looks? Or would I be better to just toss an alternator on it?

I have a spare 6 volt generator I could get converted to 12 volt also.

Using a 12 volt generator and voltage regulator from a diesel of the same time frame is referred to as a "stealth conversion" by some folks and it works just fine. Also, converting a 6 volt generator to 12 volts works fine as well, just remember you'll still need a 12 volt VR.

Yes, you can swap on a 12V generator either from a diesel tractor or from a '56-64 Ford passenger car/light truck, then add the diesel's 12V regulator, and you'd be in business. No harness changes required. That's the simplest way to change to 12V.

Note that if you use the passenger car/truck generator, it will have four open slots in the rear for cooling versus one slot on the diesel tractor one. More slots have the potential to allow water inside the generator. You can buy a 20 buck rubber boot from Dennis Carpenter to cover the slots and keep the water out. Also, the diesel tractor uses a different pulley than the car/truck one. Tractor has a wider belt. Just two tidbits to keep in mind.

My 950 gasser is running a stealth 12v Genny conversion from a diesel. If your sos still has indicator lamps, change those too.

Not sure why but when I try to post from my iphone I can never read the post in "modern view"

oh well. I have a spare 6 volt genny I bought a while ago, I'm going to stop by the local electric shop today see if he can rebuild it to 12 volts. I actually have a "spare" 12 volt battery too.

So only things I have to buy are the Voltage regulator and all new light bulbs.

And reverse the cables... Coil may eventually fail after 10 or 15 years of use, so a 12 volt or a ballast resistor will help.

As my uncle used to say.. ".get some 12 volt fan belts for that tractor."
