9600 Brake trouble (again)

Well I thought I hit paydirt when I found a new master cylinder at NAPA at a good price. Over a week or so, I noticed I started to have to pump the brakes up, then it got to where it has little brakes and won't lock the wheels. I also noticed that the rubber gasket under the new top has swelled out of shape and too distorted to use. I was wondering if the same thing has happened to the rubber cups inside the MC. Any ideas b4 I tear into the new master cylinder? I have checked the fluid level and it is fine. I am using the Ford brake fluid. Thanks

Me thinks the rubber parts inside of your MC are not compatible with the brake fluid. I wonder if you could buy the rubber parts from NH and put them in your MC?

In terms of brake fluid, there is DOT 3/4/5.1 (glycol-based) and there is DOT 5 (silicone-based). 3/4/5.1 are basically the same stuff (differences in boiling points and viscosity aside) and 5 is an entirely different animal. Glycol-type and silicone-type are not compatible with each other and generally require different systems (and levels of care) though it is entirely possible to have a system that could use either (assuming seals that are impervious to both fluids).

I would be impressed if there were non-special-case systems out there that used or required or desired DOT 5. If the parts that you used were intended for glycol-type fluids and if you used a glycol fluid, I would be tempted to consider bringing it back and asking some questions...

I believe the trouble is that the Ford system uses oil like light hydraulic oil whereas the.Napa replacement likely is for automotive brake fluid. The seals and fluids don't like to interchange, a kit from new Holland may be the only option

I still have the old mc. I may see if the cups in it look useable and if so, install them in the new cylinder. The old mc was rusted up big time but the cups might just be ok. We'll see.
